Low Platelet Count

I viewed my CBC on my hospital's website.  My hemoglobin is a little low but my platelet count dropped to 72 from 94.  If it was concerning, I am sure my doctor would have called.  Anyone have this happen or any information on if the platelet count is something to be concerned about.

 

I have my blood drawn once a month. I do take 6000 ml of vitamin D3. I was just worring because I don't want them to tell me I cannot take the Remicade anymore. I am speaking to a surgeon on Feb. 14 regarding having the J-Pouch surgery. If I can just make it until June on the Remicade, I will be happy.

Kim: It's doubtful that a low platelet count would stop them from doing Remicade. Surgeons would be a little more nervous if your counts get too low but they can still deal with that too. All of the things you are on aren't normally responsible for lowering platelet counts so you seem good there. Do you know any of your platelet levels from the past? Some people just have the levels you are at normally but I would keep an eye on it and make sure you don't continue going down and down. Platelet levels in normal people fluctuate from day to day and even from hour to hour, but normally they are at levels higher than yours.

therearemiracles: There really aren't many things you can do on your own that actually raise platelet levels per say (prednisone often can) but there are many, many things which can cause lower platelet counts and if you eliminate those things your counts can go up, if those were what were responsible for it being down in the first place. I know you have been on many different treatment things and it is possible some of them brought your counts down. If that's what happened they should raise back up gradually on their own if you are no longer doing the things which brought them down. There are a number of things which can decrease platelet counts from meds to pain killers to vitamins to supplements of all different kinds.
