By now most members on this forum have heard of Chang Shan and how it may help those suffering from UC triggered by immunological responses. After reading about the herb and discussing it with a neighbour who is a physician, I decided to see whether or not it would improve my health.

For over a year I have suffered primarily from proctitis. Despite having an arsenal of pharmaceutical products at hand, I've experienced all of the inconvenience and pain the condition can bring. The dozens of natural herbs, oils, and compounds I've also tried to date have had no real effect on my condition except Chang Shan.

For the past 10 days I have taken 10g of Chang Shan each day. The results haven't been dramatic, but I've recorded a distinct improvement in my condition. I've had periods of 'better' health in the past so I am not ready yet to report Chang Shan as a bona-fide cure. However, if my trend continues for another 20 days I will gladly recommend it to anyone.

I am interested in hearing from others who have tried Chang Shan. By Chang Shan I refer to Dichroa febrifuga. I know there are other hydrangea roots marketed as Chang Shan, but these do not have the same properties as true Chang Shan.

The Chinese herb Chang Shan available in the USA market place is 1x, 5x or 20x.

20X is seldom seen because of its cost. 20x is an extract meaning 1 gram has the equivalent strength as 20 grams of raw product.

Your Chang Shan product most likely is 5x. Subsequently, if you are taking 10 grams of 5x then you are taking to much. The proper dosage should be a total of 2 to 3 grams of 5x daily. Taking, 10 grams of 5x for a short period should offer no adverse side effects. However, this statement does not hold true for all individuals because of their unique medical conditions and health. You can overdose on Chang Shan!

I would encourage you to also consider the Paleo Diet.

I would stay with Chang Shan for a much longer period then 30 days; I would consider at least 6 months. The reason you are getting this early positive response is the amount of Chang Shan you are consuming daily. I have personally take this amount for 2 months without any negative results … however, I know full well that others who may take this amount may end up in the hospital.

So, a word of advice let you your doctor know you are taking the Chinese Chang Shan and if he or you are concerned you may monitor your progress with blood tests. One noticeable observation will be an elevated bilirubin count.

Thanks for the responses.

I am familiar with how processed Chang Shan is concentrated and am taking the equivalent of 10g of the root per day. No more, no less. The "999 Brand" product I am taking is in a powder form to be mixed with warm water.

After 6 months of the SCD diet with no improvement I determined that my UC is not likely to be improved by the Paleo diet. For over 50 years I had no gut or allergy problems, nor any significant health issues until prescribed one too many antibiotics. That set my system to fighting itself with the results we are all to familiar with.

I appreciate the tip on the bilirubin. This is something I will want to monitor.

If I remember correctly, I purchased mine from an eBay vendor. It's been a while so I don't recall the vendor's name. If nothing is available on eBay, you may have luck finding a product on Amazon. Just make sure you get Dichroa Febrifuga and not another Hydrangea root posing as Chang Shan.

I stopped using Chang Shan about a month after my posts last year. At the time nothing I took helped my condition. Prescription medicine, Chinese herbs, careful eating, etc. did nothing for me. Every specialist I consulted with told me I needed Remicade or a similar poison. That's a path I'm not going down unless death is the only other option.

At the urging of my wife I requested and got tested for Clostridium difficile bacteria. The test came back positive. After a course of Vancomycin my health improved 90 percent. If a person diligently captures daily data on health and symptoms as I do and presents that data replete with charts to a physician, it makes no difference. Most want their patients dumb and expect only vague information from them. I recently had another test performed and it too determined an imbalance of bad bacterial. This time around I'm beating the infection back with Grape Fruit Seed Extract. Things are looking good as long as the fires in the gut remain under control.

I hope Chang Shan is the magic bullet you are looking for. In my case it wasn't. My focus is now on identifying potential bacterial, virus, and parasitic causes of my condition.

C diff was a killer for me too. After two rounds of Vanco (the second being double dose) I believe that Culturelle and S. Boulardi was what finally killed it off.

What test did you have done to check your balance of bacteria?

Probiotics can work wonders on some :)

The parasitology test I took was from a private company in Illinois with the name Doctor's Data. The Comprehensive Parasitology stool test cost me approximately $175. It provided results on beneficial, commensal, and dysbiotic bacteria. It also sought to identify normal and dysbiotic yeasts and any parasites that could be found. The report provided with my test was good and included information on natural antibacterials that could be useful to defeat my dysbiotic bacteria.

There may be similar 'all in one' tests available through main-stream health providers, but in my experience physicians order tests to identify specific parasites, bacteria, etc. My opinion is that if you or an M.D. are not sure what to look for, the problem may never be found. I'm now a believer in comprehensive tests.
