Like bananagirl, my advice was going to pertain to post-procedure. I've had 11 of these procedures by now. My routine is:
- pack a water bottle and a zip lock baggie of Club Crackers, with salt. Keep in the car.
- in recovery, when asked if you're thirsty, only sip water, skip soda and never down an entire glass even if you want to. I did once and it all came back up, after I was dressed and about to go home.
- I also feign sleepiness so they give me a second IV bag. It's really not hard to fall back to sleep after the initial wake up. I feel my best if I've had at least 1 full bag of IV fluids and at least half of a new bag.
- We go straight home, absolutely no dining out.
- I sip water and eat a few crackers on the car ride home. I make sure I have sunglasses on too. And doze off and on. Again, sipping water, eating a cracker or two.
- Once home, I set up a pitcher of water, a plastic glass with flexible straw, a bowl of more club crackers on a table by my bed. I go to sleep but wake up off and on and each time I do, more water, more crackers.
- After a few hours of this, I am ready to eat a LIGHT lunch. Just a cup of soup, a half sandwich, etc.
- Back to sleep again.
- By dinner time I'm ready for a small dinner.
- By bedtime I'm pretty much coming out of it, and feeling not quite 100% but close.
My body just seems to prefer easing back into fluids and solids. I would very sick too if I were to have a large meal soon after recovery. That would be a bad idea for my gut!
Good luck.
