How long on Prednisone

Were your symptoms 100% when you decreased to 35mg? I think sometimes it's better if you stay on the higher dose for a little bit longer and wait until your symptoms are completely eliminated before you decrease the dose. The problem with pred is that many of us have had problems tapering off, even if we waited until we had no UC symptoms. I decreased pretty quickly my first time on pred but I ended up flaring when I got down to 2.5mg. What are you taking for maintenance? I was using mesalamine oral and rectal and it wasn't keeping me in remission. Eventually I opted for 6mp because I couldn't get off prednisone without having symptoms. I ended up being on pred for about a year (WAY too long!) because I was so reluctant to start 6mp. If it has only been a few weeks, you may want to stay on the higher dose and see if you're able to taper down but you have to accept that you're going to have to find something for maintenance. Some people can get by with diet or alternative treatments but in my case, nothing was working and I had to go on 6mp.

I have been on Pred for over a year. I am finally at less than 2 mgs. It's been a long taper!

Yes it made me shakey at times...particularly mid to late afternoons. Solution for me was to eat something. Usually I ate something sweet like a cookie and the shakes would stop.

Takes 40mg for 3 weeks for me to get flare up totally under control now at 20mg tapering every 5-6 days by 5mg so far so good hopefully will be able to taper the last 20mg as quick. Hope you well soon.

Pred gave me all sorts of crazy side effects, shaky, heart pounding, insomnia, laziness even though I couldn't sleep. It was shorrible. I also gained a lot of weight from it. I didn't intend on being on it for so long, I just couldn't taper off, my symptoms kept returning.

     My feeling is that the faster you can taper off the prednisone, the better.  When first diagnosed in 1998, it took only 2 months for me to get off the prednisone.  Second flare in 2000, another two months.  However in 2002 it took three or four months.  After 2003, I started flaring more frequently with longer stints on prednisone.  I became dependent on it in 2008 and was on the drug until six weeks post op in 2010.  It is a HORRIBLE drug.  While it did help me into remissions early in my disease, it also gave me uncontrollable high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and full blown osteoporosis.  So, beware!
