6mp/allpurinol

I was on both at once but not very long. I discovered I'm allergic to Allopurinol. I broke out in a full body rash after suffering from abdominal pain for about two months (it felt like the pain was in the liver area). So my doc had me stop it. Well actually I stopped it and he didn't have a choice but to go along with my decision! Lol

I was told by my GI that because allpurinol inhibits 6mp breakdown, that it is commonly used to permit a lower (longer lasting) dose of 6mp - especially if higher doses of 6mp were elevating liver enzymes.

Best to discuss any concern with the prescriber. Specifically ask if it is needed, ask abotu possible effects and interaction ... etc.

That's exactly why I started on that combo as well. I couldn't get into the therapeutic range without liver toxicity. So my GI lowered my 6mp dose and put me on Allopurinol as well. I really wished I could take it as it seemed to really help with my symptoms but my body had other plans. I've since then have moved onto Remicade and discontinued my 6mp.
