Problems with Pentasa

  Hi Everyone,     I know I went back onto the meds. But I have had to come back off of them. The Pentasa mesalisine seemed to be giving me bad stomach cramps and lose stools. My colon had spasms and I had abdominal pain. The doctor told me to stop the meds and wait for my referral to the GI at the hospital. (I don't know how long that is going to take.) So at the present I am not taking the meds. The spasms stopped about 3 days after not taking the meds. Any suggestions guys. Since stopping the meds I have had a bit of mucus (only a little) but no blood.  

May be a brand thing. My consultant changed me from Mezevant to Pentasa (why I don't know) and they gave me chronic spasms and worse bloody, mucousy diahrea (can't spell that). As soon as I stopped them I was much better after two days. I also had similar problems with the Pentasa suppositories. Back on Mezavant and am so much better. Tapering pred and down to 10mg. No blood, 1-2 bm's a day, no urgency.

ok i will ask me doctor. I live in the UK, and to see him I have to wait till the 29/04/2013. the GP's cannot percribe me anything eles but what I already am using.

For the last 2 days though I have had perferct poos, no blood or mucus. Maybe it has left me? :) Or am I being hopeful again.

Mezevant is just another brand of Mesalazine. It is released differently in the body to Pentasa. Pentasa is released in the stomach whereas Mezevant has a coating, meaning it reaches the colon before being released.
I too am in the UK so don't see any reason why you can't get it.
My IBD NUrse said sometimes people don't get on well with a particular brand maybe because of the other ingredients in it or its action in the intestines.
Go back to your consultant or if you have a IBD NUrse and see if yoy can try a different brand like Mezevant.
