I am on a prednisone taper and only have 2 weeks left but am experiencing the worst swelling yet. The 1st time I was on the taper was from Jan '12-April '12 and had barely noticable swelling in my cheeks. I was put on it again from the end of Oct '12-the beginning of Dec '12 and again, no real swelling. I've been on it this 3rd time from the beginning of Jan '13 until now and after the first few weeks I noticed swelling in my cheeks then it progressed to my neck, back, lower face and now my abdomen. How long will it take for the swelling to subside after I am finished? I feel silly for being so concerned with it but it's really gotten me down.

from what I understand...it could last a while after you're off the med completely.

Can you not take any mesalamine/5ASA meds?

I had moonface for months after getting off pred. The body weight was not easy to lose, mine wasn't all water weight, it was actual pounds from overeating due to an increased appetite. I hope it happens faster for you.

i was in the same boat as you. i had only 2 weeks left but my flare started up again so im up to 30 mg again. i have the hole moon face going on too and my neck. usually it takes a few weeks before it completely goes away.

For me, the swelling in my face takes as long to go away as the amount of time I was on Prednisone. So if I'm on it for 8 weeks, it takes 8 weeks for my face to go back to normal. I know that isn't the same for others because I've heard others say it goes away as soon as they stop taking it.

Don't feel like you're being vain! It's bad enough having this disease and then to have it effect your looks just makes it that much worse. I completely understand how you're feeling and always feel that way when I've been on it too.

@quincy - I was on mesalamine from Jan '12-Jan '13 but my doctor didn't feel like it was controlling things enough (which it really wasn't) so at the end of Jan I was placed on the 6MP.

It's all still pretty new to me. I feel like for the most part I'm handling things (emotionally) well but there are some days/weeks that it just begins to get me down. Hopefully things will be back to normal (appearance-wise) quickly. I tried really hard to be mindful of what I ate but I know there were quite a few days I was a bottomless pit and didn't think twice about it. Hehe....

mesalamine oral only or combo of oral/rectal mesalamine?
What exactly and what dosage?

Where exactly is your UC...throughout or limited to where?

I was taking it orally, I can't remember the exact dosage -- I know it was 4 horse pills (I actually still take 1 daily) and then it was also (and still is) taken through enemas when needed.

Mine is throughout the entire large intestine.

@soystud - I do exercise 2-4 times a week -- both cardio and weights (depending on the day and how much time I have)

@soystud - I understand why you suggested it to me..I def feel a ton better when I do make time to get to the gym and that would obvs help with weight gain

oh yea, stay hydrated - exercise, pred and extra vits can require extra h2o (but i'm sure you know that already) :-)
