In case anyone was wondering.... (pretty much a repeat of what I posted in the Ostomies forum, if you happened to read there too)
GEEZ! I need to edit this post briefly to add that so far, I feel SO much better than I did with UC and I noticed that immediately upon waking up....it is amazing! (edit over)
Just wanted to stop in and let you know that my surgery went well and I am now on the road to recovery. It was quite the long day, due to a delay in the OR with the surgery before mine. At some point I can write out the whole saga if anyone in interested!
Long story short...surgery ended up starting about
4 hours later than planned, and I didn't get to my room until 1AM that night (technically the next morning)! Once settled in, I pretty much got little catnaps between people coming in and machines buzzing. I was up and sitting in a chair by 9AM and went for my first of 3 walks for the day around 9:30 AM and spent a lot of time sitting in the chair.
I was finally given the OK for clear liquids late in the afternoon...yippie! I have a button to push when I want pain meds, and have been getting less hesitant to use it. The pain hasn't been awful, but has been getting worse as the night goes on....so we'll see what tomorrow brings.
Right now, the biggest problem is, I really haven't slept. I'm on a high dose of IV steroids, so I'm guess that is the biggest problem. They seem to be causing high energy, insomnia, and maybe anxiety and bad dreams even? I'm go to talk to a doctor tomorrow before deciding take something, whether it be sleep aid or anxiety med. I've never taken anything like that, hate to add more drugs, but I just might have to so I can get SOME rest.
Anyway...I guess that wasn't a very short update, but I do have nothing but time here and got carried away! Thanks again SO much for all of the positive thoughts and well wishes, and I will keep everyone posted until you get tired of my ramblings, and feel free to ask any questions if you have them.

Congrats on getting through the op safely. I can see that you had a short time with UC from diagnosis to the surgery now. it must have been a really tough ride. Glad you are over it.
Be well,
Conquer

Thanks to each and everyone one of for the kind words...all the support means so very much! :)
@Shan 2013~ So far, I have had no complications. They say everything went well during the surgery, but it did take a long time...6 hours, and that is not counting prep or wake up time. Hard to believe, but it's not even been 36 hours since I got out of surgery, so I still have a lot of recovering to do! I just keep trying to do everything they say will help me most. One step at a time will hopefully get me through this as smoothly as possible.
@Conquer~ You are right, I hadn't been diagnosed very long ago, and I thought about
that a lot while I made this decision. It was a VERY rough time during this flare, and I've come to peace that this is best for me.
@Minners~ Thank you very much....your words mean more than you realize. It is easy to be worried and second guess at times...to feel like all of you who are still willing to fight are the brave ones.
@Shearbear~ I did talk to the docs about
the sleep issues and we are going to start just trying Benadryl tonight, and if that doesn't work, maybe some Ambien if I really have to...fingers crossed something works soon!
Again...thank you all!! I will keep updating in between laps around the hall!

Yes, that was a fast process...happy to hear your perspective is in the right place and that all went smoothly.
Will you be getting a pathology report of the not-so-dearly departed?
All you have to share is appreciated...tell all or whatever suits you.
Looking forward to your updates!

Hi everyone! Thanks everyone for the continued well wishes and responses :) Just wanted to pop in and let y'all know that things are still going very well. I would be happy to give more detailed updates, but don't want to bore anyone with a bunch of stuff nobody really cares to know. So, if there are any questions, I would love to hear them and am
open to answering anything.
Right now I'm just deciding what to have for breakfast and will soon start getting up and about
for the day. It's amazing how busy you can stay just doing the day to day things here in the hospital...and the weekends are SLOW compared to weekdays!

Woohoo...good to hear things are going so well for you and that the hospital regimen is keeping you "busy"!
I'm curious of what they're teaching you about
the ostomy, emptying, etc. How are you dealing with that aspect?
How have family and friends been dealing with your surgery?

glad things are going well -
just pretend this is face book - tell us all the details - you know, what you watched on tv, how the toilet paper is (soft/hard/rough) , what you're going to do next, and then after that -

Of course I SHOULD be sleeping, but as most of us know, that is hard to come by in a hospital...kind of ironic, isn't it?
Going on day 6 post surgery and things continue to go very well for the most part... I even have a pretty good chance of getting outta here some time tomorrow! That will depend on how my wound drain is behaving and if I respond well to being off all IV meds.
@ Soystud~ Funny enough, my days spent here have seemed so busy that I would destroy your facebook feed with every mundane update!! There don't seem to be too many dull moments when it comes to healing...and even when there are, somehow the time seems to fly, usually. And the toilet paper here sucks, good thing I don't need much now!!
@ Quincy~ They have taught me a lot in such a short amount of time about
my ostomy, and I could not speak more highly of the Ostomy Nurse I have, and all of the ones I have met. I saw them twice before surgery day, and she has been part of my routine here in the hospital since about
36 hours post op. So far I feel quite confident about
living with my stoma and bag. I have been emptying it myself from the beginning,we changed it for the first time today....most of which I handled, with a lot of guidance and supervision. I have learned about
various supplies, how to get them, what I might or might not like to try in the future,etc.... I will be sent home with enough stuff to last me at least a month and my nurse is arranging for various samples/kits and such to be sent to me from different companies, free of charge. She will be available for me to contact anytime I feel like I need support when I leave here...and I can arrange for someone to do an in home visit or two to help with my first few bag changes if I desire. I can tell you more about
this, and the other very positive experiences I have had so far if you are interested.
@ Lemonhead~ Yes, surprise....I did it!! Thanks for the well wishes and kind words. I'm sure while I'm recouping I will have plenty of time to write more about
all of this....and there is a lot to tell if I really get into it all.
OK....I really should stop babbling and be trying to sleep....I'll be in touch, hope everyone is doing well!!

Best of luck UCwhat! Feel good. When did you decide on surgery. Feels like we were just chatting about
you being turned down for Humira and you were going to try remicade . Things happen fast around here. Great your surgery went well:)
