I had strep throat when I was 6 years old and was prescribed amoxacillin for it. During this time I was away at a friend's and started to have about 10 BMs a day, mostly bloody.

I was so embarrassed, I tried to actually hide it from my friends and family until finally my Mother got concerned about me being in the washroom for so long

I got taken to the local hospital and the resident there thought it was a bowel infection.

I wasn't getting any better and my Dad & Mom decided I needed more specialized care and took me to a Children's Hospital.

Long story short, after about 1 month of hospitalization, being on IV nutrients and 2 days before my colectomy surgery, my body started getting better and went into remission within a couple of weeks.

Been dealing with UC since.

I’ve always had a troubled stomach and had to be careful of what I ate, but in 2010 I had a hysterectomy (kept ovaries) – 2 weeks after that my eating changed completely.  I suddenly became allergic to eggs (had the actual test done), cannot tolerate any red meat or pork – all get me violently ill.  After a while, it became salads, and a bunch of other things I couldn’t eat.  I would be sick with D, pains more than not.  At the time my Primary Dr. thought it was IBS, and or nerves (I’m a single parent and was going to college visits, and college prep etc.). …the cycle continued.  In 2011 I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (another autoimmune - SI joints are deteriorating).  Had Colonoscopy on December 6, showed some inflammation – that Dr. thought it was just due to prep, continued with constant pain and D.  On December 26, fell down a flight of stairs, and instead of going to Dr. for back pain, took 12-14 Advil a day for a month.  Started bloody D, had a million tests, finally went to new Dr., finally diagnosed in February with UC.

 

Anyone else know or think correlation between Hysterectomy and UC?   Now Rheummy and Gastro are talking about Humira down the road…for now, meds for UC and Hip joint injections.

Most definitely too many antibiotics, then the bad bacteria takes over!

Faithmatic, according to researchers there's a large genetic link to IBD for those of jewish descent...more research is being done.

Pb4, called my Dad. Have the Ashhe**** Jewish on both sides. I guess thats where my UC comes from. Interesting !

I have no idea what "caused" my UC. I suppose I was just predisposed to it....it's in my family big time. And quitting smoking triggered it without a doubt. I am still glad I quit smoking even though I am minus a colon now!

I believe my UC was triggered by some infection. about a week before the beginning of UC symptoms I had some nausea episodes as if I had some stomach bug, but then I didn't end up actually getting sick until UC began.

The only unusual thing I ate immediately before that was a pack of ramen raw.

If I ever find out that that pack of noodles really did give me UC... eyes

Intestinal disease is very common in my dad's side of the family, but I don't know if any of them had UC. Most of them have been dead for a while and I don't know their diagnosis status. All I know is that my grandfather was diagnosed with Diverticulitis at an old age. My father is just fine at the age of 59.

I have had constipation problems my whole life, especially as a young child, and I started seeing a little bit of blood on toilet paper, but nothing more serious than that, probably about a year before the full onset of UC symptoms.

Also for a few months before UC I had a bit of a sweet tooth and was eating too much candy nono I've never smoked tobacco, haven't smoke marijuana in 5 years, and rarely had more than 4 or 5 drinks per week (usually all of those in one evening, though. I only drink socially and I socialize fairly rarely).

Stress!

I had no idea what stress was until last year when the landlord of my shop decided to sell up on me. Suddenly my young family's only income was cut off - the income I was relying on to get me through the remainder of my undergrad Degree and into grad school. Well, somehow I managed to close down my business, submit my Honours thesis, and apply to grad school (as well as taking a part time job to continue paying the bills). Then in the midst of all this - as if I didn't have enough to worry about! - I started seeing blood and mucus in my stools every day. Let's just say I celebrated the completion of my thesis by taking a little vacation to the colonoscopy clinic.

So yeah, stress did it for sure.

faithmac...not inbreeding....just genetics "tendencies/flaws" on both sides probably with no dilution of other genes added to the mix.
Although other genetics can bring other issues...

I believe that all of us that develop the symptoms were very likely predisposed to it and the triggering factors could be any number of things but what I garner from reading a lot of responses is that stress is a factor....I believe mine was triggered after experimenting with cocaine in my youth. That was very stressful for me and I soon developed the symptoms thereafter. I say that because as soon as I would snort, I'd have the urge to have a bowel movement hence my reasoning for the predisposition.

Started smoking when I was 15 in 1975, quit smoking in 2006 at age 46, diagnosed with UC in 2011 at age 51.

My brother that never smoked was diagnosed with UC when he was 23 and has been dealing with UC now for 20 some years mainly with Azathiropine.

No idea really. I don't drink, I don't eat junk food, nobody in my family has ever had stomach problems. I originally thought the blood and stuff was a reaction to the mefenamic acid I was taking for period pain - was taking quite a lot of it at one point until it suddenly started giving me intense gut pains.
Gave up smoking 2 years before onset though.

I had never been to the doctor for any stomach / bowel issues. Do not have a family history of UC or immune disorders. Lent of 2011 I had diarrhea for a few weeks. Then I saw some blood, so I went to my PCP. She did some tests and asked if I'd eaten any shellfish. I had - shrimp two Fridays in a row. I got my UC diagnosis thirteen months later.

My UC was diagnosed just over 3 years after I quit smoking, so I'm not sure if that is too long a time frame for the two events to be linked.

My full 'you've got something seriously wrong with you' symptoms appeared 24 hours after a big night out just before Xmas 2011. So, alcohol definitely played a big part in bringing on my first full flare.

My latest flare was almost certainly caused by antibiotics.

Food poisoning and Burger King.

Lol, the reason I say BK is because my now fiance and I would eat it constantly after school for weeks on end. *shrugs* It was close and convenient! (less than a block away by foot) But I do regret it now in my older years. (This was like 6 years ago)

i belive mine was caused by a combo of things mainly bad lifestyle i wasn't eating well and when i did eat it wasnt anything healthy also i was addicted to pain killers for six years between the pills and not eating and eating to much diary all these things is what did it.

Yes, that makes sense. I've done my own searches to see if anyone else had experienced this, and I haven't found much. I shouldn't have said caused in my precious post because we can't be sure. It may have been a contributing factor. Ultimately, I may be one of those people that developed UC and no one can explain why. Like I said, they found no genetic predisposition and there seemed to be no other environmental factors.

I also believe my UC was caused by the hepatitis vaccine. My symptoms started right after I got it and progressed to UC over a few years. I've also read of two other people who attribute their UC to a vaccine - not a lot but enough to make me feel validated. I don't believe it is limited to the hepatitis vaccine and can't explain why it just affected me, but do believe there is a link. This didn't happen to me until my mid 40s with no prior symptoms.

I think my triggers were me starving myself and thus confusing my body, depression (which is thought to be inflammatory) and extreme stress. Coupled with good old fashioned bad luck of course.
