Hey I have a pilonidal cyst/sinus and going to have surgery.
I see antibiotics can be used to help treat the sinus. If the doctor gives me antibiotics will it effect my pancolits?

Yes, antibiotics commonly affect colitis and it is know to induce a flare in some people. However it might still be worth it. Just be sure all your doctors (including GI) know about
it and has reasoned pros and cons when prescribing it.

I was given antiobiotics for an infection after an operation, specifically metronidazole and amoxycillin, and it induced a flare after my UC had been kept in check for 8 months. I think (hope!) I'm getting it back under control now, but when I asked around I was given several other tales of woe, so it is a risk taking antibiotics with UC. However, in my case, I had little choice.

Are you taking probiotics? If not, you should be. If yes, I think you should take more while on the abx. I'm scared to death of the things, but as said, sometimes they are necessary.

i think it really depends on the antibiotic. a couple of months ago i had to take antibiotics for pneumonia and it didnt even affect my colitis.

I've been on a couple courses of antibiotics over the last 6 months. I haven't flared from any of them. Had some loose stool and extra gas but it resolved. I triple my intake of probiotics during the course of the antibiotic and take it three hours after an antibiotic dose.

There is a very high probablility that the antibiotics will effect your colitis. Very high dose probiotics can help mitigate the problem but most of the time even that can't eliminate the problem.

there are other ways to treat your sinus issue - drugs should be your last option - there is no question that all the antibiotics i took for my sinus problems got me here !
don't know about
the cyst thing tho ?

Yeah, like soystud says, there are other ways to help a sinus infection. I was hocking (sp?) up nasty brownish green mess for three months during the winter and still wouldn't touch them. Everybody around me was too, they got antibiotics and got better a little more quickly than me, but I'm still glad I didn't go to the doctor. It sunny and 85 now and I feel great.

Yea just to the side of my tail bone. Not the head sinus lol.
Well the doctor said he is gonna leave the wound
open i think and not close it up, and i'm going to have dressing changes every day for awhile. Maybe that is to avoid using antibiotics, i dunno.
I guess I can just refuse to take them. Cant the body get rid of infections by its self?

i had a cyst there, too, but luckily it went away on its own after i stopped squatting on the toilet. that put so much pressure there. my dad also had one that he needed surgically removed. he didn't get antibiotics for it though and he has UC. he wasn't flaring at the time.

uh, pilonidal cysts don't go away on their own I don't think, and the risk of infection could be high depending on what meds you're on.
I'd take the antibiotics. I'd take good probiotics starting now and after the surgery.
