Hi everyone can someone please explain to me what the symptoms of a bowel blockage are..
Recently I have had pain under my right rib will alot of gas, bloating with nausea, blood and mucos with chills and headaches.
I have had gallbladder, liver and kidney checked all fine.
Bloods all normal NO inflammation etc.
They have told me I am in a uc flare.. How can this be if I have no inflammation markers???
They have put me on pain killers and 2 antibiotics as they are guessing I have an infection.
I suffer left sided uc and have had this problem on and off since January.
Up until Sunday I was going to the toilet 6 times with only mucos and blood but was alot with alot of pain. Doctor could not find anything so sent me home. Since Sunday did not go to the toilet for 3 days at all no mucos etc nothing then yesterday went once and it was mostly watery diarreha with two solid bits of stool and now I am back to not going again...
Does this sound like I may have a partial bowel blockage ???

When my son had a partial blockage (he doesn't have UC), I took him to the ER because he was in extreme pain. They did a CT scan which show the partial blockage. He described it as a sharp aching kind of pain under his right rib that spread to his back.
Have you had a CT scan?
Btw, even in my heaviest flares, I've never had inflammation markers.

Thank you for the response sherry.. They won't do a ct scan at the moment . They were very bury the other day in the er and I felt as if they just wanted to get rid of me..
What your son has described is they pain I have been having on and off since January and no one will listen to me.. I have seen several doctors. I am starting to become upset coz no one is really doing anything.
I am having a colonoscopy next week to be checked for uc and toxic mega colon.
I'm not sure what to do anymore coz no one is listening to me and because the tests rant showing anything you keep sending me away with painkillers.

Pain pills cause constipation. Try a dose of stool softener.

It sounds more like a UC flare to me.

I had a blockage the day after a colonoscopy before UC was diagnoised. I had an extreme urge to push I felt like I couldn't get off the toilet because of it (funny now but I was in Kmart bathroom wondering how i was ever gonna get out of that stall)
I also had nausea and sweating and just felt really sick.

The ER CT scans practically everything that walks in the door. A bowel blockage can be really dangerous, I highly doubt they would discharge you without a scan if they felt your symptoms indicated one. Likewise, I don't think your colonoscopy is "checking for toxic megacolon" -- toxic megacolon is an emergency condition. Untreated it will kill you in a matter of days (or hours). If a doctor suspects you have toxic megacolon, they will evaluate you immediately, not send you home.

Sheree, maybe you meant pancololitis?
Sadly, UC can cause alot of pain. I would sit in the toilet and break out into a cold sweat, shaking from being in so much pain going to the bathroom.
Also, pain killers can definitely add to nausea and can cause constipation. If you are nauseas, you probably aren't drinking enough which adds to constipation.
I'm glad you are getting checked out next week though.

I've had 3 small bowel obstructions in the past couple of years, the symptoms (from WebMD) included:
1. Cramping and belly pain that comes and goes. The pain can occur around or below the belly button. Mine was continuous and I described this as being like gas pain on steroids, The NP in attendance said she had never heard it being described more appropriately. .
2. Vomiting.
3. Bloating.
4. Constipation and a lack of gas, if the intestine is completely blocked.
For the first one, my PCP sent me home on a liquid diet and it cleared up in a couple of days. For the second and third one, knowing the symptoms, I went to the ER and they hospitalized me for three and two days respectively.
They put me on an IV and stopped all solid and liquid intake, and gave me morphine for pain and the IV forms of my usual meds. During the first hospital stint, they inserted an NG tube, but not the second.
I have to say that I've never been so excited to fart, as it’t the first indication of the obstruction having cleared.

I'm assuming that the blockages that most of you are talking about
is caused by inflammation??
Sheree...what UC meds are you on at this point?
It sounds like a flare to me.

Hi everyone thank you so much for everyone's input.
I am only on azathioprine 3 tabs a day (or its other name imuran)and vitamin D.
My gastro dr took me off all other drugs over a year ago as I had not had symptoms for along time.
At present I look as if I'm pregnant and just about
due thanks to bloating, I feel sick and pain comes and goes..
I went to the toilet this morning and my stool is round but with diarreha as well blood and mucos. Gas comes and goes mainly when I'm passing stool or after I eat.. I also feel as if something is now stuck in my throat..
No one has even bothered to do a scan of my stomach either
If I do have a blockage I suppose the bowel prep for my colonoscopy will fix it lol..
