Asacol vs balsalazide

I couldn't afford the asacol so I asked my dr for something cheaper. He put me on the balsalazide. I don't know what to do. The balsalazide makes me so sick to my stomach, I don't know how much longer I can stay on it. The asacol worked great.

I had found a coupon one time online for the asacol. It would have cost me more using the coupon so I didn't use it.

Is there any other meds out there that are like the asacol that won't make me sick?

Please help!

I know there is apriso and lialda which are mesalamines like asacol

Have you considered enemas? I personally didn't find that any of the 5-ASAs helped (Asacol, Rowasa, etc. -- see the wikipedia page), but the enemas didn't mess up the rest of my system like the pills did. Rowasa and Canasa are enemas and suppositories, respectively. Depending on what part of the intestine is affected, one may be a better choice than the other. Not sure what generics are available. I just stopped Balsalazide because of its side effects. I will tell you though that Ballsalazide only helped me when combined with Budesonide. As soon as they stopped Budesonide Balsalazide stopped working and vise versa. I also gained 40 ibs on it (in three months) even though i was naucous all the time. I hope something gets better for you. I am in the same boat just not getting better.

I've taken it for most of my 11 years with UC. No problems, except when I don't drink enough water when taking pills. Nasty powder burps, but just add more water and burps go away. I also use Rowasa(mesalimine) ennimas.

Never thought about weight gain or side effects..
