Accutane and UC

Hi..I've never had that treatment, but you could discuss it with your GI.

Have you considered laser treatment?

I feel for you...although my acne was never cystic or severe, it was difficult to deal with. I got adult acne when I was around 28 and ended up using clindamycin in a very thin liquid suspension. It did help the acne, but the solution taste was literally absorbed into my mouth and I did start having other health problems afterward.
It could have been coincidence, however.

A good fried of mine used roaccatane for acne a few years ago. He now has a terrible problem with uncontrollable anxiety and is on very strong medication.
His doctor thinks it was caused by vitamin A deposits in the brain as a result of roaccatane use. I don't think that's an accepted side effect do you won't see it on the info and after all his doctor may br wrong. To me it sounds like a potentially very dangerous medication aside from UC...

BAR - I got UC @ 24 and I took accutane @ 28, I had no problems w/my UC at all. I cannot tell you how amazing it was to actually see my face after having acne since I was 11. I can remember driving to work and feeling painful pimples begining to form and then by the end of the day would have new red pimples under the skin that would last from weeks (if I was lucky) to months.

My sister had to go on it twice and my husband also had to go on it in high school. The reason I went on it at 28 was that I always had 10-15 pimples on my face at any given time but they were starting to become cyst like, over an inch in diameter and were not going away. I tried EVERYTHING from lemons, onions to every script, topical solution, infomercial, sometimes multiple times in multiple combinations. It is hereditary and nothing else worked for me.

As with taking any prescription, you run the risk of side effects. I got Kidney Disease from taking sulfasalazine and asacol, I have been on pred for a year since being dx'd w/kidney disease and have cushingoid syndrome from the pred.

If the benefits to you outweigh the possiblity of the risks.......... Also, you can have them start you off slowly on the accutane, they do monthly blood checks.

I got some acne while being on pred, but is mostly a different kind than I used to get and in different areas of my face.  It has gotten much better since being at a low dose.

I wish you clear skin. Again, being able to actually see myself in the mirror was amazing and not having painful pimples growing in different stages on your face growing larger minute by minute, being painful, not to mention all the psychological stuff that goes along with it.

Also, I am not sure how laser treatment works, but def look into it.  That was one thing I did not try.  I am not sure how that changes your pores.

I took accutane many years before I was diagnosed with UC -whether it triggered my UC or not, I can't say, but 5 years went by with no hint of UC. I think we can drive ourselves crazy trying to figure out what exactly triggered this disease. Anyway, my acne wasn't too too severe, but it was consistently bad. When I got engaged, I decided I'd had it - I wasn't walking down the aisle like that! There are of course some pretty serious side effects associated w/ accutane, but for me the benefits outweighed the risks. I had very limited side effects. If your doctor is recommending it, it could be worth a shot. But, to echo others, just chat with your GI and make sure he/she is ok with it. Good luck!

I also believe I got UC from taking Accutane. There's nothing like this in my family, and I was afflicted within a year of taking it.

But if you already have UC.. who knows. It will fill your colon with yeast, from what I understand.
If you decide to use it, be sure to take strong probiotics while you are on it, as you would with an antibiotic.

While it improved my skin -- which was very bad -- I still get breakouts. And my worst scars are from the Accutane causing giant cysts while it's working. I would rather have never taken it, needless to say!

I developed UC from taking generic Accutane (Sotret) in my teen development years. Accutane is KNOWN to cause severe crippling disease in developing fetuses, why wouldn't it cause severe crippling disease in developing adolescents?

I started taking Accutane when I was 18. I was diagnosed with proctitis at 19 and then with UC at 20 as it was discovered that the UC was actually causing my proctitis. Clearly I can't prove that Accutane caused my bowel issues, but it certainly is a strange coincidence, no?

Accutane cleared my face right up though. It's a miracle drug for acne. Wish I had never taken it though because I truly believe it triggered this disease.
