What I find most interesting is that Dopamine signals effect T-Reg cells calling off or reducing inflammation ... so the whole amino acid balancing thing. Weird connection.

Fascinating! This really sounds to me like what is really going on. Unfortunately, it worries me that this article is from 2007 and if this was so promising, why haven't we progressed further down this route?

I'll tell you why.

Because when they find the cure, the people that find it mysteriously dissapear. Those people are probably "sleeping with the fishes" right now.

I believe if I read the article right they are proposing that in this case Helicobacter Typhlonius "is" the cause. It was the only bacterial infection they found when compared. Lacking T-bet caused the bacterial infection with Helicobacter Typhlonius... which can be transmitted to others that are also lacking in T-bet.

But that is specifically in mice - and in this study. Perhaps we are as well though? I wonder if anyone else has looked into the presence of Helicobacter Typhlonius and people with UC.

In any case, you're right Why not try and identify the pathogen - if this turns out to be the case... rather than try and alter the immune system to tolerate it.

Anybody have any information on this particular bacteria?

Good find London Lurker. In the above referenced paper the title is quite startling, as it points to possibly another mechanism for the cause, Micobiata would seem to indicate a Microbe acting in concert with the natural bacteria found in the gut.

Hmmm.. Hey OM,

I was thinking about this today. When I was first diagnosed I was given both Cypro and Flagyl (?spelling) - My GI at that time said they always have the best results when the two antibiotics are combined. And it was a long course. 8 weeks maybe... I forget. But it was long.

I actually got better fast and to a high degree. But soon after I stopped them (a few months) I went back into a flare. I went back to the GI a few months later and we tried antibiotics again, and same thing, it worked, but a few months after stopping back into a flare I go. I went through this three times. All with the same results.

So i was just thinking, let's say this had something to do with our bodies for one reason or another having reduced T-reg. Even if we treated it with antibiotics, there's a chance it would either come back or we could just as easily become re-infected again anyway. Since it's something about the lack of T-reg that causes infection, or makes one more susceptible to infection - hence the need to address the issue with reduced or no T-reg, not just the pathogen.

Anyway - point being, maybe in this unique scenario antibiotics would help - but be just a temporary solution.

O, and TbX21 is a gene that is tied into the methylation and transulfation pathways. Fix the pathways and save yourself. Until the pathways are fixed your body is stuck in cycle with one pathogen or another. You cannot get rid of the pathogens permanently.. just the nature of life. Our body has to be best configured/enabled to deal with them through diet and other healing modalities. Dont think we can nuke them out. We sometimes must use an antibacterial bomb to bring the numbers down.. but it isnt a "cure"

Well it may be more complex than we think, now that the other paper, at least the title seems to show that. I heard blueberries help with stopping the urgency and bleeding, but it was the frozen instead of fresh. Tried fresh and seemed to help some, but thinking the freezing process would kill and "soften" the natural skin some for easier digestion of the skin, yet still retain any properties in chemical form the body needs to work.

What's scary is the possibility of transmission to loved ones. Oh boy, can this be true? I sure hope not, but now reading about transmission in  mice seems likely possibility.

Dx in 2009 as UC / progressed to Pancolitis (my guess now)

Caught C-Diff 2010 hospitalized with many BM and treated with vancomyacin oral which did take care of the Cdiff. Put on Asacol 400mg x 12 a day and Prednisone 20mg x3, plus Azathioprine, which I didn't like and quit after a few weeks had remission of few months (kinda/sorta-at least not as frequent-and stool not as before thicker) Now in major flare and looking for anything to help. Was on Asacal again which didn't seem to help after a month and now back on Pred (grudgingly by doctor) although only 20mg day which really isn't enough to treat my symptoms. Terrible absorption of meds due to I guess the pancolitis etc. etc.

You never know AG, stranger things have been proven. I would go with the evidence, but of course humans (we hope) are much cleaner when it comes to interaction than rodents.

However, we are reasonably close in DNA makeup, which makes it plausible, and why mice are chosen to perform these first tests.
