hi everyone .im 23 years old

diagonised pancollites in 2007

no blood since 4 years

last month colonoscopy showed-ulcerative collite grade 4.

currently on medication-pentasa-1500mg/day,azathioprine-100mg/day,colospa retard(mebeverene hydrochloride retard capsules-400mg/day).

i experience 8-9 Bowl Movements per day..when ever i discuss this with my doc .he takes it lightly.am i reacting more or this is somthing which is really worth noticing. plz i need you suggestions.

8-9 BMs a day isn't normal. What consistency are they on the Bristol Stool Chart? And if you don't wanna google that (<_<), are they firm, loose or watery?

I don't know what grade 4 UC is, sorry. Is that mild, moderate or severe?

If it's moderate to severe, and your doctor isn't taking it seriously, sack him and find a new doc.

Re your poll: whichever floats your boat the most. They're fairly similar diets, so if one will work for you, the other probably also will.

multiple bm is a consequence of active UC. sounds like yours is active.

some people get fairly quick remission from meds, and some only get the edge taken off and still have various levels of symptoms like diarrhea, bleeding, multiple bm ... etc

I can understand why a GI would not be alarmed to hear you had 8-9 bm, because you have UC.

The question is, does the bm frequency indicate you need stronger or different or additional meds? Has your gi discussed next steps? Is there any sign the meds are helping?

Thankyou both for your response. stools are sometimes loose sometimes watery. And uc grade 4 is severe. Whenever i talk to my GI about BM's he replies main problem was blood ,which has now stopped so i donot need to worry but i think its almost a year now but number Of BM's are same. Im taking pentasa(mesalamine extended release tabs) 2.4g and he says its the max. Dozage given to patient ,but i think meds rnt working.wat shall i do now :(

I think I would try adding rectal mesalamine to the mix and also increase your dose of oral to 4.8g. I would also switch for lialda or another med that treats the lowers tract. 8-9 a day is not normal. If that doesn't work, I would move on to the next option (if 8-9 bothered me, which in my case, I know it would) if you're okay with this, don't go crazy with treatment.

First of all: blood is not the only thing which matters in colitis. I had severe pancolitis for at least six years (probably more like eight) and very, very rarely saw blood in my stools. For most of that time I had useless doctors who didn't give a darn, and by the time I found one who did, it was too late. He put me onto Remicade, but it did not stop me from ending up in hospital a month later, where an abdominal x-ray showed a dilated colon in keeping with toxic megacolon. That was in 2011. Pred got me out of the woods that time, and would do so again a few more times, but in Feb this year I finally relented and booked surgery. I now have an ileostomy.

The purpose of this unhappy little story is not to predict surgery as your eventual fate, but to show that severe colitis is not a benign condition. It can lead you to being systemically ill (fevers, anaemia etc.). At worse it can lead to life-threatening situations such as toxic megacolon or a perforated colon.

So, from that, I would urge you to seek a new, more proactive, doctor. Pentasa is a waste of time for you. There are other meds you can try: 6MP/Imuran, Remicade, Humira. Diets, too, if that sort of thing floats your boat. Best of luck.

Hi, much the same for me. Except BMs seem more prevalent. I was on Asacal HD, Which I think is same as mesalamine, and after a month still bleeding, although not in toilet that I noticed as much, I was still bleeding. But now on prednisone from doc in box, so she was afraid to give me more than 20mg for a month. Now I become my own doctor. Do I take the Pred 20mg 1x daily for a month, which is when my next GI doc appt. is, or do I take 40mg to control symptoms. then do my own tapering.

The reason I have been away from GI Doc is because of insurance dropped me for several months. Now I'm in a fix as ran out of asacol and doc in box although she wrote prescription couldn't or wouldn't fill mine. I pay $10 co-pay per script through the program. But after 1 month on asacol and no relief, I'm beginning to wonder about the effectiveness anyway.
