FDA have classified stool as an "investigational new drug" and it is now illegal to do anything with stool related to the treatment of disease without FDA permission in the US. All doctors wishing to work with FMT must apply to the FDA.
So, the people who stop you getting Mutaflor, now have gone a whole lot further....

I knew it was going to happen, the is a prelude to the poop bacteria pill.
Regular old poop is now a controlled substance, you will not be able to sell, buy,or dispense poop without a medical license.
Do you have a reference.

I had a family member pass away today from C. diff. because the doctors were too dense to consider FMT (and my in-laws are too passive to raise hell) and instead, just kept prescribing super antibiotic after super antibiotic and saying, "Wow, I guess she just picked it up again in the nursing home" every couple of months when she would get sick again because the spores would hatch and take over. I feel terrible for the people suffering now as this decision will only ensure they continue to suffer needlessly. Absolutely ridiculous.

Good grief, all the US FMT providers will have to setup clinics in Tijuana now I gather as per helminthic therapy providers. But no biggie- just a 20 minute light rail ride and 3 minute walk from downtown San Diego.

Probiotic I'm waving at you from north county.
I kinda agree with this. I think fmt without serious pathogen/parasite testing is rather dangerous. It's poor mans ivig.. With none of the safe guards. However, it is unlikely to have anaphylactic repercussions like ivig.. Just more possible bad bugs

I attended a lecture by Dr. Lawrence Brandt (has FDA permit to use FMT on C.diff patients in NY) last week. He said that the FDA considers stool to be "a biologic". Therefore, the agency is granting only limited permission to medical practitioners to use it on patients at this point. He commented that some researchers recently got cold feet about
potential liability issues arising in the more distant future in case the donor had an undetected/undetectable health condition at time of transplant that might crop up yrs later in the recipient. He himself favors a universal donor system rather than individual recruitment of stool donors, and expects a synthetic stool substitute to become widely available in 3-6 yrs. He has seen a success rate over 90% in patients he has treated so he does have confidence that experimental FMT is leading researchers in the right direction for improved treatment of intestinal disorders. Many unknowns remain, however, such as WHERE in the colon the transplant should be placed for optimal benefit. He struck me as genuinely concerned about
patient outcomes-- not a reactionary who wants to protect big pharma or colorectal surgeons! / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I think it's important to keep thinking for ourselves. If you have a partner that you are already sharing all bacteria with (kissing, inter course, ..) then I really can't see the major risk in using them as a donor for feces and administering these yourself.
In saying that; I see it as a inevitable first step that they start regulating who has a license to do this with patients on a formal basis

Oh dear...wonder about
Australia? Anyhows is Old Mike is right and this is infact a prelude to a poop pill then it's a welcome decision. The sooner a poop pill is available the better. I have a feeling that, thanks to the antibiotics most people are pumped full of these days, that we are missing many of the crucial bacteria that helps regulate our intestinal health and digest food such as gluten.

I hope this is a good sign . Makes me laugh thinking about
how much $$ they will charge for a Rx for a poop pill. Also good names:
UCpoopris
Asaproop
Poopricade
Anyone else have a snappy name?

Any developed pill will be poop free and indistinguishable from broad spectrum probiotic.
Any preparation for FMT will still be tested/processed poop. People can do whatever they want with poop (theirs or others). Medical professional's use will be regulated, and subject to some obligations to handle/process in a standard way, report side effects in the usual ways, ...etc.
This should
open the door to insurance coverage, as long as it can get past "experimental" status.
I understand the theory, but I have not seen any smoking gun to convince me this FDA policy (or Metaflour decisions) is part of any big pharmacy conspiracy. At least so far.

You'll have to forgive my lack of enthusiasm for having the FDA claim sole property of this method of treatment considering most of their high level officials now worked high level jobs at Monsanto in the past, which probably has a great deal to do with why so many of us our sick to begin with (thanks to GMOs)... The FDA allows food fit for consumption to be chalked full of hormones and antibiotics without a thought. I think I'll stick to my own donor for now, thanks.

F the FDA. I'm so sick of our corporate fascism I can't stand it. Screw the FDA and Big Pill, but I repeat myself as they are one in the same. Today is six months to the day I've been in remission and off steroids, which I attribute to DMSO. The only study I've found on DMSO and IBD was done in Baghdad, Iraq, in 199 fracking 2. 1992! Probably the worst time in that city since Mongolian hordes sacked the city 800 years ago, but they can carry out a UC-DMSO study a year after the Gulf War, but it won't even get approved, much less studied in America, ostensibly due to someone dying forty years ago or some such crap.
You're right Meredith: Monsanto=USDA and FDA=Big Pill companies
They can begin researching without passing this regulation. And Mutaflor was shown to greatly benefit IBD patients when taken in conjunction with helminths. That's out too.
end rant.
Hateuc while trying to think of a snappy name I remembered what is to me the most hilarious word for poop ever: dookie. Any time I think of that word I laugh uncontrollably. I actually had to muffle my laughter here in my office. Hopefully the name of the pill with have dookie somewhere in it. Oh, the immaturity I still have, it keeps me young.
