I take VSL#3 in the over-the-counter through-the-mail doseage. (I am jealous of those whose insurance covers the DS version which is "double strength").
Yes it is more expensive than over-the-counter probiotics but if you read the ingredients of all OTC probiotics you will see that VSL#3 is much higher quantity billions of little guys and that's what my gut needs, billions and billions. If I could get results with OTC probiotics I'd do it in a minute (I've tried).
VSL#3DS has clinical tests proving it helps UC. None of the OTC probiotics have that.
Will it work for everyone? Probably not, some people report it makes them gassy.
I've tried other OTC probiotics and they make me gassy.
I have 3 kinds of probiotics (plus VSL#3) in my fridge right now. One is not good for me (tried it) and I'm leery of trying the other 2. I have them in case I get brave enough to try them plus when my DH takes antibiotics he also takes probiotics.
You need to try several to find one that works for your gut but take enough pills to get to a "therapeutic" dose which in many cases is many, many pills to equal one sachet of VSL#3. (disclaimer: I have no connection to the company except as a user haha).
