Asacol rectally?

I'm will run out of Canasa before my next doctor's appointment. Still have plenty of Asacol. But Canasa is what I depend on -- can't tell that Asacol does anything.

Does anyone know if I could use Asacol rectally for a few days? Not the foam or suppository ... the pill. Seems to me it would work.

Why can't you just get a refill on your Canasa before your doc apt? Usually when your refills run out and you order a refill the pharmacy will contact your doc and he will approve the refill. Due to the coating on the Asacol pills I don't really know if that would work as you propose the idea. Might. Might not. You should be able to get a refill on the Canasa before your doc appointment.

I wouldn't take Asacol rectally. Like gary, I'm confused: can't you just refill the prescription, or call your doctor's office and ask for a new prescription?

I also would bet that Asacol IS doing something, given that Canasa is only really hitting the rectum, and Asacol is treating the entire colon. But either way, the reason NOT to take the drug rectally is more that it's not supposed to be taken rectally.

How many Canasa do you have? And when is your appointment with the GI?

Can't your pharmacy call or fax in a request to your GI for a refill?

I don't think so because the coating is made to dissolve at a certain PH. I would imagine it would go in and come out the same. Do you have any rectal meds at all? Can you renew the script or get samples from your GI? Mine usually gives me a script that's good for a year.

idea  Yes, to not stick asacol pills up his bum.. nono

notsosicklygirl is absolutely right. Asacol releases based on the pH in the colon (the right side). Apriso, for example, releases at a slightly lower pH. The pH in the rectum would not be right for the enteric coating to come away and release the mesalamine.

In other words, it would come straight out again. I doubt it would hurt, although it might irritate an inflamed area to have something non-soluble stuck up there.

So, at best a waste of time, at worst mildly irritating.

I wouldn't do it if i was you.. the pills aren't meant to be put rectally. I don't think you'd swallow a suppository if you had no more asacol, would you? It could potentially damage your rectum wall.

sorry folks, i come from the whatthehell school of thought - bad me :-)

and i assumed that DD would have his big boy pants on and would say to himself, " gosh, i know these liitle pills were meant to go in my mouth, but some guy on the uc forum said it would be ok to shove a couple up my hooter and see what happens - kinda what i was thinking too but guess we're both dopes cuz there they are floatin on the water next to my pizza poppers - huh - suppose i won't be doin that again ?"
