PalaceDan - that sounds like good improvement to me! How long was it before you started to see improvement? I am in day 1 tomorrrow!

I've posted on other threads, but in short, 2.5 weeks in. Have been flaring without remission for 7 years. Uceris quite rapidly largely stopped bleeding (a couple of small incidents), reduced urgency appreciably but not totally, reduced frequency form 6-8 to 3-4. No noticeable side effects. I'l stay on the course for the 8 weeks. So far it's promising, but not fully cutting it so far, and if it does work the question will be what will happen when I stop it.

It didn't help me. I stuck with it almost 2 weeks and showed no signs of remission. In fact, my flare worsened and I got the side effects of headache, and nausea. I'm really sad that it didn't work for me because now I'm on 60 mg of pred -- the highest dose I've been on yet.

I heard that Uceris is more effective for left-side colitis.....does anyone know if that is true?

Also - do you have to taper down on it?

I know my Dr feels it's more effective for UP, but I don't know what she bases that on.

Re tapering, yes, the guidance is no taper because the systemic absorption is so low.

It works from the ascending colon all the way to the rectum. That's how it was explained to me.

According to my GI no. I took it for 8 weeks and stopped.

My story was I started with 60 mg Pred, I was diagnosed with Pancolitis on 2/28/2013. I had left sided colitis a year before. I was wearing diapers. 60 mg Pred didn't do a lot, in fact I was still bleeding. I asked my GI for Uceris and he agreed to it. He told me he only had one patient on it before and it was unsuccessfull. I wanted to try it anyway.

He let me taper down the pred while I was taking Uceris. In about 2-3 weeks my bleeding stopped. I was also put on Imuran. While building Imuran up I took Uceris. My symptoms subsided and I was able to stop Uceris after 8 weeks.

I build up Imuran to 150 mg. So far so good. No symptoms yet. Solid stool, no blood, just a little mucus in between which subsided fast (ate gassy food).

Uceris is after Remicade my second favorite drug and my GI was very happy and surprised how well it worked for me.

Yeah PalaceDan I also hear that Uceris is more effective for proctitis - I wonder why this is the case? Right now my meds have caused my inflammation to improve from pancolitis to only in the rectum and rectosigmoid - does that mean Uceris might make the difference for me? But - why would it work better in these areas? PalaceDan - did it work for you? Was your inflammation localized in these areas as well?

It works better because the coating is different. It works where you need it. Entocort dissolves in the last part of your small intestines and ascending colon whereas Uceris works from the ascending colon to the rectum.

However I would treat Proctitis with enemas in addition.

Yeah the coating is diff I get that but what I don't get is that I heard and from what my doc said it is more effective from the descending colon to the rectum - which would mean it is more effective in the last half of the colon then the first half of the colon - have other people heard this? This is the part that I don't get.

Also, with regards to steroid enemas and Uceris - isn't that too much steroids? If I remember correctly, my doctor said to do only one at a time.

I am currently on Day 13 trying Uceris and I am still not doing well. Going about 12 times a day, most of them with urgency, most of them I see some blood. I do like that I don't have any bad side effects from the drug, but then again, it doesn't really seem to working for me. I need to call my doctor and tell him, but I know he'll want to put me on Predisone and I was hoping to avoid that.

Julie, I was in the exact same position. Trying to avoid prednisone made me invest too much time in Uceris. Now I'm on 60 mg of prednisone and the bleeding is getting worse. :-( Give your doc a call. I hate pred, too, but I hate flaring worse.

Right now I seem to have plateaued. My inflammation has always been about 10-15cm, but impossible to shift. Even pred didn't remove symptoms completely.

I'm definitely a lot better than I was before I start Uceris, but now it seems to be standing still.

Thanks janey47. Spoke to my doc and now I'm on Prednisone. yay. Fingers crossed this works for me. I was up every 2 hours last night. Never been this sick before.

GI's office is full of Uceris brochures... Maybe if I'm not coming off of steroids, I'll get it this time. She tried in March, but insurance denied it. I'd rather come off of steroids :-D

For what it's worth, I did the 8 week course of Uceris the mintue it hit the market- started in March, I believe. And it worked great, firmed things up, no bleeding, less urgency. But, within a week of stopping things went back to my usual baseline. Which means urgency, daily bleeding, & softer stools. Ah well, it was good while it lasted. I just stopped after 8 weeks, no taper, no withdrawal, no side effects noticed while I took the med. I wish it could be a daily dose!

For those of you that saw a benefit from Uceris, how long did it take for it to show signs of improvement? Also, what dosage? Thanks!!
