Hi all.

I've just got the serology back from the blood taken at my colonoscopy 5 weeks ago and I have been told I'm positive for Yersinia enterocolitica.

Has anyone had any experience with this related to UC?

Did you have UC / prior to this or was this a colonoscopy due to further investigations as you were showing symptoms ?

I have heard this is nasty, Yersinia enterocolitica causes Yersiniosis
an infesctious disese. Caused by undercooked meat, contaminated water etc". I have not experienced it first hand but i have heard Cipro is the first point of attack.

Yes! I do have experience with this bug. My husband was dxed with it.

it can become chronic and do all sorts of stuff all over your body. It causes horrible arthritis.

Long term abx is modern medicine's attack of it.

Herbals include:
Cryptolepsis, Cinnamon oil and clove oil.

The one catch is, they need to test you for lyme at the same time. Yersinia and Lyme are cross reactive on western blot. I wouldnt treat unless I had been tested for lyme too.

I have had 3 flares of UC over 17 years. Recently this flare (4 months now) is the most severe.

The bloods were taken at same time as the most recent colonoscopy at the start of May. The results took a month to culture and I've had two weeks of cipro and doxycycline.

I feel I was getting better but since ceasing the two weeks, I have regressed a bit.

Currently on;
Rifaximin
Rifabutin
Tinidazole
5mg prednisone
Salazopyrin
Mesalazine Enemas

You'd need longer abx therapy for chronic yersinia if you go abx route. Biaxin And plaquenil Are your stars, taken concurrently. Good luck! It's a nasty bug.

Scary, but it's good you have the diagnosis.

Once you've completed treatment, however, INSIST in repeat testing to make sure it's gone.

Yersinia enterocolitica is usually mild and self-limiting. It can become systemic, but that's fairly uncommon. Are you on any immunosuppressive meds?

Do you have a fish tank? Only half kidding; a doc once told me his pediatric patients got Yersinia from drinking fish tank water.

I have not heard of blood test serology for Yersinia diagnosis. It is a bacteria found in a stool culture and only takes 3 days at most to grow. So I wouldn't be anxious to take antibiotics that might not be necessary. Even if you did have a past infection, if the bug is now gone and hasn't been recovered in culture of stool, or anything else, then there is nothing for an antibiotic to kill.

There is indeed a western blot test for igm, igg, and igA.

Again it is cross reactive for lyme.

PathogenKiller-If the bacterium was contained in the intestine, I would expect only the IgM and IgA to show up positive for specific antibody. However, Westerns blot is rarely ever used in clinical diagnostics so far as I know, you're more likely to do a serum ELISA for specific Ig.

When yersinia is a long standing infection it is not going to be contained in the intestine. It would be hard to be contained in an ulcerated intestine even if it was acute. This is too understudied of a bug.. we think its not an issue, when maybe it is.. as you must know from your immunology studies.

My doc (Immunologist and Rheumatologist- a brilliant PhD from russia where evidently they know about stealth pathogens, lol) uses both IgM and IgA and then goes from there. I know two folks currently being treated for Yersinia with wonderful results after a life time of gut issues and very very painful extraintestinal manifestations.

I would be very grateful if you could tell me more about your doc and his approach to treating Yersinia, and also more about your acquaintances' cases. I have recently been diagnosed with this and it is really difficult to get information about treatment.
