Lialda side effect

Hello! I've been on lialda for maintenance for over a year and have been experiencing bouts of fairly intense stomach pain off and on. I know it's an NSAID and can cause chronic gastritis. Has anyone had experience with this? What did you do about it?

I could be wrong but Lialda is not an NSAID. It is a mesalmine. People with UC should not take NSAIDS.

Actually I think it is. An NSAID is a Non Steroidal Anti Inflammattory Drug. Lialda is not a steroid, but is an anti inflammatory drug. Therefore mesalamine is a specific type of NSAID. It is a member of the NSAID family. See here http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Management_of_ulcerative_colitis

It is an NSAID relative, but it is not associated with the GI troubles that your typical NSAIDs, like Advil, are.
My old GI said to "avoid NSAIDs like the plague". And he put me on mesalamine. So not really comparable.

I read in that wiki article that it says 5 ASAs are related to NSAIDs not that they are the same. It even says on Lialda website not to take it with NSAIDs. If it was an NSAID you would be able to take it with other NSAIDS

Alright thanks for that, but they are quite similar in methodology, because they both inhibit a part of the inflammatory pathway. Anyway that's beside the point, because Lialda is commonly associated with stomach pain. So any help?

You could ask you GI to try you on a different Mesalmine. Some people cannit tolerate one and do fine on another. Drawback is i think all the others you have to take multiple times a day. But on that i ciuld be wrong.

Also if you are not taking it with food you could try that. I have heard for some people it makes them sick if they do not eat with it.

Also it could be something else like gluten or lactose. You may want to try an elimination diet.

I've been on 3.6-4.8g of Lialda daily for almost 2 years now and can't say I've experienced the pains.

Are they actually in the stomach or do you mean in the general bowel region?

What time of the day are you taking the medication?

Yeah it's the stomach region (between my ribs). I take it in the morning. Also I don't do dairy or gluten and I make sure I eat a sizeable meal before I take them.

Have you had any injuries, surgeries, or shingles? I have pain in my stomach. The doctor says that it stems from a nerve between the ribs. It is called intercostal neuralgia. It is the worst pain I have ever experienced. It comes and goes. Sometimes weird things set it off so I think it is my UC. This is TMI, sometimes when I have a BM it is like I can feel it move through the area where it hurts and it sets the area on fire. But I know it is not my UC because I just had my first ever clean scope and I am still in pain. My doctor said sometimes all the inflammation the colon has had can confuse nerve endings so it might be possible to have it without the injury to the nerve.

No surgeries and no injuries that I know of, and that's not TMI, we all have UC here haha... Thanks I'll talk to me GI about it. Do you have any bloating with that?

I am having the symptoms of right side pain near the ribs, I feel sick all the time, and I think it's causing me diarrhea instead of putting me in remission. I have been on it for about 3 years now.

Hello!

I was on Lialda in March and had similar side effects with abdominal pain. It turned out that i had a rare adverse effect from the medication and was hospitalized with Pancreatitis from it. It was determined that i have an allergy to mesalamine.
