So i took uceris to no avail, and am still in what id call a "mild" flare (have been for almost 2 years now). Although theres obviously noyhing "mild" about it, it can just be that much worse. As per my agreement with my GI, looks like the pred ive put off until now is next up. Im not happy about conceding but have no more options. I know there are plenty of examples of people going into very brief remissions on it, but having trouble weaning off of it. Both my regular doctor and my GI seem to think its just the best thing out there. And I know that the people who post here are generally the worst off... But are there any examples of people actually going into some sort of the meaningful remission induced by prednisone????

Me! I've been in remission for four years after a course of pred, and I'm still going strong! I tried using just the oral/rectal mesalamine combo, and was close to remission, when I caught a tummy bug from my son that threw me back into the flare. My doc and I figured I'd been sick for long enough (especially considering I had a new baby) and I had an upcoming interview I HAD to be well for.

I did a relatively short course. I started at 40 mg in mid-March and was completely off by early May. For a good third of that time I was only on 10 mg or 10 mg every other day.

I think that they key to my success is the oral/rectal mesalamine combo. I stayed on the enemas nightly until I had been in a symptom-free status for about a month. Then I tapered to every other night. I was doing just fine on that, so after a couple of weeks, I dropped to twice weekly.

During my initial UC attack years, pred yo-yo's including some high doses for around two years put me into total med free remission (save half a dozen IBSish days a year) for around ten years, and I was on no maintenance drugs because I was allergic to all of them.

In almost all cases I wouldn't expect pred to put you into a long remission without the help of maintenance meds. It is very rare.

I'm on day 3 of my first pred course. So far so good, amazing turnaround. I see my GI again on Tuesday and if I am doing well enough he says he will take me off the pred and put me on Uceris.
I really didn't want to take the pred, but now that I am on it, I am really glad I didn't refuse it. I started feeling better the first day, really amazing.

Thanks all. I was planning on being on delzicol (and am), but recently droppd trabsdermal ldn. Didnt seem to being doing much except costing me money.... Maybe i should take it back up also.

I did Uceris and I became symptom free. I'm now maintaining with Imuran. I hope I stay symptom free forever! :D

Why don't try the real meds like Remi or Humira instead of the sissy meds like Apriso and Asacol ;p ;)

Gonk- you know pred can cause adrenal insufficiency, and uceris doesnt, so you may still need to taper pred fyi. Quitting it cold turkey and picking up uceris wont necessarily be seamless in all aspects.

Fruitgirl, i havent had great results with enemas, and i hate doing them. I dont even like taking pills...!

Anyway, ive decided to get a juicer later today and im hoping for some benefit from that.

freddyj, what state are you located? I went in for a 2nd opinion today to a team of "professional" GIs in my state and they all say that doctors who put people on prednisone are horrible doctors... but im currently flaring and uceris isn't doing anything for me. Would appreciate a reply, thanks.

Uceris was much easier on my system with the same positive results. YMMV. Expensive however.

my dad has been in remission for over 25 years since he did 6 months of prednisone and sulfa enemas. he said it really helped him- bleeding was his worst symptom.

91895- im in CA. 2 GIs have been pushing it all along, and my reg doc, who is good but fairly old school, is also. The dr who prescribed me ldn also cautioned that ldn would likely be better at keeping me in remission than getting me there, and said I may need to consider a course of pred. As much as i dread it, it is basically #2 in line for this crap, and the next drugs just get scarier. Ps .... Technically speaking any MD is "professional". There arent "non professional" GIs., though some may act that way.

Obviously Im leery of any and all of these meds, the stronger they are the greater the chance of other problems.

Twice.. seemed good? I feel like I need the nutrients, but dont necessarily need the roughage at this point.
