GCOUPE, weightlifting for me too. That has been one of the toughest things about surgery for me. Everyone says you can do anything with an ostomy, but you are really tempting fate (hernia) if you lift anything heavy, so I've been out of the gym for almost a year now In my prime right before I got diagnosed I was able to bench 135, which is a lot for a girl
Holy shnap. That's more what I started with. I was benching 95 lbs, 25lb plate on each side, not even 12 reps when I was 16. I was pretty weak. I'm an ectomorph, aka hardgainer but worked my ass off to get to near 1000 pound club for my PR. deadlift, bench and squat.
Of course, proper form cannot be overstated.
I recommend looking at vids of Elliot Hulse, aka Strength Camp youtube channel, to stay motivated. I think you'll like it.
I think you could have definitely gone to compete if having an ostomy wasn't a factor :[
I still think that you can do it though. I have seen vids of people bodybuilding/competing with ostomy. Maybe they're pushing it too far?I did compete, for several years in my early 20s
My progress stagnated a lot in the year before I was diagnosed though and I guess in some ways a relief to look back and know that I never hit that 225 squat because my body was probably pretty screwed up and sick, though I didn't really realize it at the time.
You should definitely try competing if you haven't already, there are always people of all levels at meets, it's an awesome atmosphere and people are so friendly, it's great to meet lifters from all over.
If my ostomy were permanent I would find a way. But I've never been more than 15 weeks post-op this year, and my abs just aren't strong/healed enough for me to feel safe. After takedown in a few weeks (hopefully my last surgery) I've heard I can start easing into it in ~12 weeks or so. Exciting!I want to compete, it sucks losing all my mass/strength because of a flareup and have to work 10 times harder to get em back because of prednisone and malabsorption while other normal guys can just keep "adding" on their mass/strength.

He lost 50 lb during a flare last year, I remember when he came back to the gym everyone was shocked to see the change. Anyway, he got back to it and just started competing again. It drives me crazy to see my former training partners (and rivals!) continuing to progress while my muscle mass continues to waste away but everyone's got their challenges and I know I'll get back there someday. I love hitting a PR no matter how heavy it is so I'll be psyched just to squat the bar again
