VSL3 DS - Is there any way to get this covered?

I have BCBS HMO in MA. VSL cost is way too high but I feel the the 900 billion probiotics in vsl3 ds could really help my gut.

Is there any way to get this covered? I know it's considered a medical food. Still, any way? Doctor is very willing to help here.

I have Anthem BC/BS and I discovered that the DS version is covered. I still prefer to pay for the capsules though, even though they are not covered. I do not have an HMO. Have you checked to see if the DS version is covered, or are you just assuming that it is not? The way I discovered was to go the Myanthem website and under my pharmacy section I can enter any medicine I want and it will tell me the cost. I was surprised to see that my insurance actually covers it. You do have to have a prescription.

My insurance company covers VSL DS #3, however, it was a hassle to get it initially approved. My dr prescribed VSL, and I went to my pharmacy to get it and the pharmacist said the prescription was denied because my insurance company required prior written approval for it. My dr had to contact my insurance company explain why I needed VSL, fax a form to the insurance company. The insurance company reviewed it, and a several weeks later I was able to get the prescription filled at my pharmacy. It's a $45 copay for the VSL, the highest of any of my medications, even though the total cost of the VSL is much less than say the total cost of Lialda.

Caremark in KS covers DS. I pay about $58 for a 30 packet box.
