It was the Pro-Optimal Whey Vanilla. It gave me stomachaches and gas. I didn't care for the taste either. And I can get over taste to do something short term, but for me to do something long term I have to somewhat like the taste too.

I guess another example of what works for some doesn't for others.

I just started using PureGreen Protein version 2.0 vanilla flavor. Soy free, gluten free etc... Got it at my local HF store. I have been working out 4-5 times a week and while I have good strength I wasn't getting the bulk I wanted to achieve.

I confess this is not the best tasting stuff, but I am able tolerate it, the only side effect has been that it repeats, probably because I take it in the morning before I eat. Its a powder I dissolve in a 8 oz glass of water. Most of the whey based products I saw had dairy, which I have a problem with.

So this product may work for others.

As for my results to early to tell.

That's the reason I will only buy Dr.Mercola's Pro-Optimal Whey Protein - it's all high quality.

I tried Dr Mercola's. Ironically that is the only one I couldn't tolerate...
It gave me stomachaches and gas.

Cupcakespinkgal has presented the evaluation from Consumer Reports showing that many of the whey protein drinks are contaminated with arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Even the brand endorsed by Arnold Schwarzegger was not rated highly. So why would anyone assume that Mercola's whey is high quality, because he said so?

I don't know if Mercola's whey protein is good or bad. But if it is as wholesome as advertised then he should get an independent evaluation by Consumer Reports or ConsumerLab.com.

I am a long time sufferer for UC. I was diagnosed in 1999 but had symptoms for 2 years prior. I can tell you personally that protein shakes have helped during flares. I used to go strictly liquid diet but found I was not performing well at work and did not have the mental clarity I used to have. These shakes are great for your health. I have found a product from an old classmate who sells the stuff. It's called isagenix. It does contain fructose but they are yummy.

I make a daily protein shake using homemade soy milk yougurt from various probiotics (culturelle, primadopholus rheuteri, sacc boulardia, Promega 8 and others -made separately b/c each species will compete with others) and to this I add l-glutamine, hemp protein and fruit of various kinds for flavor. I do not like whey protein b/c it is highly processed, I think the dairy industry is evil and I am lactose intolerant. ALso, it's pricey and I have been income-limited at times (grad school) and I am not sure I want all the other 257 ingredients the protein shakes list.
The intestinal mucosa is very rich in l-glutamine, and (in my case) since I am producing mucus, I want to make sure I am adding that specific aa into my diet.

Some interesting products here I need to look into.

I take Isopure Low Carb, one serving per day. I mix it with water and with olive oil to add some fat.

1. what do you put in your protein shakes?
I add almond milk

2. when/how often do you drink them?
Two to three shakes per day

3. do you think they have helped your uc at all? or if not your uc, your overall health?
I'm already in remission but I was able to gain weight with it which is my goal

4. Is it safe for my teenage son to drink a protein shake that i would drink? He's 15 and thinks they will help build muscle.

5. I am thinking of getting a whey protein isolate (no lactose) do you know of a good brand? thinking of either nutra bio whey protein isolate or isopure
I use Optimum

6. I notice that alot of these whey protein isolate have l-glutamine or glutamine in them. If i wanted to incorporate l-glutamine into the protein shake would i still need to buy l glutamine seperately or is it a sufficient amout in the whey protein isolate?
