Clindamycin

Clindamycin is like taking dynamite for me, Christine. It gives me explosive D. Beware of dentists, and always ask what antibiotic they're giving you. They like Clindamycin because it's good for so many of the bacteria found in the mouth, but it really isn't good for my colon.

Yes, I was prescribed that too. My GI said it is the worst possible drug for UC patients. I took Flagyl during the course of antibiotics and for 5 days afterward to ward off both symptoms and the possibility of C-DiFF!

He said if you have to have an antibiotic, the best one for us is Clarithromycin.

I haven't had clindamycin but I have had Keflex and Duricef prior to developing UC and I always wonder if those antitbiotics made things worse. I think you should be OK Christine. I hope so!!

I am scared to go to the dentist too. I know i need some work done and I don't want to end up with an infection or on antibiotics. I have been avoiding going.

I got c-diff a month after I took clindamycin for a tooth infection.  I was offered it again before I had a root canal, but refused it and told my dentist why.  I ended up going without abx and was fine.  Never again will I take it.

Before you write him off completely please let me put some things in perspective.  Believe me I don't who this person is but, it is not that abnormal to do one root canal in three visits.  While there is more of a trend to start and finish in one visit the standard for decades is do back molars in more than one visit, often three.  Even though a root canal has been completed sometimes the tooth will abscess again, this is often due to a internal fracture within the tooth itself and often dooms the tooth to extraction.  It's not that common but it does happen enought to be not rare.  Clindamycin is recommended by the ADA for such case if one is allergic to penicillin but Cipro is sometimes used if one is trying to avoid Clindamycin.

All I am trying to say that what you describe is pretty common and routine.  That said one should always feel comfortable with the caretaker they are seeing.  My patients actually enjoy seeing me.  Maybe it's time to see someone else.

No it doesn't mean anything is that bad.  When one area bleeds but the rest do not it often means that there is a localized problem and not a generalized one.  It can be do to a defective restoration.  Usually a skilled dentist can recognize the issue and simply take care of that problem quickly and the bleeding area will go away.  From the sounds of it I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I went to a dentist with a severe toothache in November 2010. He put me on 150mg Clindamycin. My reaction to it was so bad that diarrhea was attacking me around the clock and I became so weak that I barely was able to drive myself to the emergency room. When I checked into the hospital my vitals were severe. I spent a week in the hospital. Initially they told me that I had Crohns Disease. Eventually they came back and told me that the problem was Ulcerative Colitis.

Here it is about 8 months later and I have never been back to the dentist to correct my initial problem with my teeth and my mouth. Now the pain has reverted to the level  that I initially felt last November when the dentist prescribed the Clindamycin. The problem is that I am very paranoid about taking the antibiotic and I know I need to get the tooth and gum swelling down so treatment can be done. I really do not know what antibiotic would be safe to take in light of my serious reaction to Clindamycin. Can anyone shed any light on this? So far I know of two different antibiotics suggested, amoxil and duracef. Will one of these be safe and not bring about another serious bout with diahrrea? Is there a better antibiotic if not?

I too have an abscess in my gum. It was under the tooth, and my dentist put a timed antibiotic plug in between two teeth. It was extremely painful, and even though my dentist gave the ok, the abscess came right back. This is the third time I've had it in the exact same spot. When my dentist put the plug in, he said that I was the first patient of his that has ever had an abscess come back in the exact place. I'm not surprised.

Anyway, when it came back the third time, I put non-antibiotic, sulfur-based acne medicine on it. I stopped drinking hot drinks. Now it's light iced teas, l put the remaining ice on the abscess until the ice is all gone. And I stopped chewing on that side of the mouth. The abscess has been gradually going away. It is now only at the very top surface of the gum, and it does not hurt anymore.

One note of caution. The acne medicine I am using on it states that it is for topical use only. However, I get boils and have been putting acne medication on my open boils for years. In fact, I've had dermatologists instruct me to. The medicine penetrates the skin, especially if it is opened. I don't think it really makes that much of a difference considering what the antibiotics can do to me. So I just dab a tiny bit of the medicine on the abscess and spit out a few times so that I don't swallow the medicine.

And remember some bacteria grow rampant in moist, dark, climates. You can't do much about the dark and moistness of the mouth. But you can make sure not to drink and eat hot things.

Oh yes. I'm also rinsing my mouth with antiseptic mouth wash. That also helps.

Really sorry to hear that HFR. Geez and I thought cipro was the devil. Antibiotics are bad news man, though the 'cillins are generally regarded as safe.
