I have just been put on Apriso instead of the Canasa. Does that mean that my ulcerative proctitis got worse? I had the short colonoscopy done last week and the only thing I remember the doc saying is that it is mild. I go back in 2 weeks for a follow up. Is anyone else here on Apriso? It seems to be taking some time to kick in as I am having a lot of problems still.

If I were to guess, I'd say your uc has spread in extent which is actually quite common with this disease -- it spreads from the rectum up the large intestine. Canasa is a suppository and it effects only the rectum which must have been where your uc was initially limited to. Apriso is an oral medication that covers the entire large intestine.

Although, if your GI is giving you an oral medication for disease that is limited to jut the rectum then it is a waste, as the oral meds are not good at reaching the rectum (therefore there are suppositories and enemas which are best at reaching the rectum, and rectum and sigmoid colon respectfully).

I'd call and ask the extent of your disease. Mine started at 14cms and spread to 50+cms during the last flare I'm fighting off.

Yes, I plan on asking a lot of questions when I go back. He was saying that the apriso is time released so that it would work by the time it got that far I guess. In the 3 days of taking it I don't see it helping so far.

Do you still have the supps?

Your doctor may have RXed Apriso to hopefully keep your inflammation from moving upward in the colon, which UC tends to do. It sounds like a precaution rather than a mistake! / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

As far as I know the doc said with the apriso being time released that it would help me along with the canasa to use as needed. I am constantly having cramping and diarrhea though with a bloating. I guess thats just part of it. He did say that by condition has worsened some but still "mild" in his words. Don't know what he thinks mild is! rolleyes
