Day 3 SCD cleanse; cramping normal?

Hi All,

I am new to the forum. My hubby was diagnosed with UC in early July 2013.

He is now 3 days into the SCD diet cleanse phase, and we will start on phase 1 in another day or two. He is also on 750mg colazol (2 tabs at a time, so 1,500 mg per dose, with three 1,500 mg doses daily.) This is an increase over what he began on, as the original dosage was providing no relief at his one month follow up w/ the GI Dr.

The cleanse period seems to have reduced soiling "accidents, " however, he is very tender on the left side of his abdomen. Also, he continues to feel urgency and cramping frequently, but usually nothing is coming out except for the occasional blood/mucous.

My question right now is.....is the cramping and urgency with either nothing coming out or just blood/mucous a typical symptom? My concern is that there could be some sort of blockage??

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I highly doubt there is any blockage. The intro diet really has almost no fiber, so there is going to be nothing coming out anyway. When I was on it, it was also just blood and mucus and that continued into phase 1 as well. This is also probably why the accidents have gone down. As far as the cramping goes, I think that's pretty normal too. Maybe he is just eating less than normal? I always get stomach aches when my stomach is empty.

To me, it doesn't sound like there is much to worry about yet (not that I'm an expert at all)...Hope it works really well for him!

Cramping definitely normal in the beginning. You'll still have symptoms but they should begin to lessen

i had cramping at the beginning they do go away after a few days, i just ate a little bit more often to fill the stomach

Thank you so much for the info! And yes, he definitely is eating less than normal. We will press on with the diet. As far as I can see, we are on our own to find our way out of this disease and the Dr. seems fairly useless except to say "eat what you want and take these meds."

Hang in there on the diet! It's a tough one! His cravings will go after 10 days! Go easy on introducing the nut flours etc! I'm starting back on the diet this week once I start to reduce my steroids! The first few days he'll feel worse with flu-like symptoms from the withdrawals! I've only recently discovered buscopan tablets from my pharmacy for the cramping! They're amazing!!
