So, I was experiencing my usual grumbles at night and thought it would be a good time to try my new Rx, Bentyl. I take the 10mg....wow felt very sick..so naseaous. Also started having a lot of BM's...not my usual. I thought if anything it is constipating due to antispasmodic. Is this an unusual reaction to this med?

Would be for me but then UC has never made me nauseous. I take bentyl but I often wonder if it does anything at all in me. Others swear by it.

Never, this drug is a god-send to me. Never made me nauseous but again, as Gary, UC never made me nauseous.

@Gary,
what dose do you use? 10mg doesn't do anything to me, minimum is 20mg, 40mg when I am in full blown flare.

I've never gotten nausea from Bentyl 10mg even when taking 2 and never noticed a constipating effect. It really does cut the stomach cramping down when I've eaten something wrong. But for you it seems to be a problem so don't take my opinion, take your gut's. Have you done a google search for bad reactions to it?

I have a bottle of Bentyl that lasts 2 years because I need it so rarely but when needed it's a godsend. My last doc looked at me funny when I asked for an Rx and nurses have never heard of it, it's an old-fashioned med.

Thanks all. It does have nausea listed as a possible s/e. I think what was most surprising was the multiple bm's. I was very excited to try this med as alot (Gary, notwithstanding...lol) have had very good results. I am so bummed about it, but you are right...my gut doesn't like it. I wonder if it was a fluke, but frankly I felt so crappy that I am scared to try it again. Guess I am onto the next...I"m thinking Peppermint pill or something...this disease..ugh!

Multiple BM's is how my gut tells me "do not eat/drink this again". I appreciate the heads up just wish it wasn't so BAM!! instead of "hey-stop that-OK?"
But the sneaky stuff that doesn't tell me it's a problem is actually more of a problem.

I think there are some Rx meds you can get instead of Bentyl. Something with mebeverine in the name? That one was a gut slower IIRC.

I take 10mgs at meals and 20mgs at bedtime. I really don't think it does a darn thing but recently I quit taking it when the refills had run out and I seemed to get worse so I had the pharmacy call the doc to refill it again. I still wonder if it does anything but I get no side effects so what the heck.

Interesting imagardener...I'm trying to think back to what I ate and what could have been the problem. Ahhh, to just eat and poop like a normal person...didn't appreciate it when it was here. Sometimes I wonder if I have IBS in the mix too. Way too much thought about my colon!

Yeah Gary, I guess if it isn't hurting, might be helping and isn't too $$, why not? I feel that way about some of my supplements. Who knows....it's like the colitis gods either smile at you or strike you down. Sometimes I don't think it is anything I am doing good or bad.

never really noticed anything when taking it to be honest. the most I took as two pills a day.

I couldn't tolerate Bentyl at all - it made me dizzy and nauseous. I take Levsin instead and it's worked really well for me.
