Side effect trouble

Yesterday I had blood in my urine. The entire bowel was dark red :( Luckily it only happened once and then my urine was back to looking normal. I took an at home test for UTI but it came back negative.

I called my family doctor and told him about my symptoms. I have also been experiencing nausea that comes and goes (no I am not pregnant) occasional weakness and some tenderness in abdominal and in back at times. He told me to go to the ER.

In the ER they did urine test that came back negative for UTI but there was blood in my urine. They also did a bunch of bloodwork checking for kidney infection, kidney function and white cell count electrolytes and I don't know what else. It all came back normal. I also had a catscan... That was normal. They contacted my GI about the Apriso that I'm on and they feel I'm having a side effect from it and told me to stop and only do steroid enema until I can get into the GI next week.

Finally my questions :) ..... Has anyone experienced this before? What are recommendations for my next maintenance med? Would mesalamine enemas be an option or would that bring on rectal bleeding instead? Would I have this same problem with other oral mesalamines?

And haha I noticed a typo in my first post. It's bowl not bowel. I guess I'm just so used to typing that word :)

Lialda, asacol hd and the new delzicol are all later-release mesalamines, but they dont act the same ways in terms of how they release.

Thank you for the medication suggestions. Also no I have not had beets lately. In fact I thought of everything I ingested and nothing was red.

No I did not have spasming that day. I am to go to a urologist also. I have had microscopic blood in my urine before but never found a cause. I had also been to a urologist in the past. They may want to do a scope this time, but the catscan at the hospital did not show anything. I guess they are afraid of it getting worse and that the Apriso is aggravating my kidneys/bladder.

quincy... Thank you for the thoughts.... I don't think my kidney enzymes have been elevated in the past unless bilirubin is one of them. This is my first time on 5ASA meds. Would enemas not cause this problem? I think the doctors looked up the side effects of Apriso and hematuria is a rare one so they decided that was the cause since they couldn't find another reason.
