Asacol to Lialda?

Hi everyone,

I have a question:  Has anyone switched from Asacol to Lialda?  If so did it work just as well?  I'm thinking of switching because Asacol isn't going generic for many more years it seems...since Asacol is now called Delzicol.  I guess Asacol was perhaps going to go generic, but they made Asacol have a gel coating and re-named it Delzicol.  Now there is a patent still on Asacol/Delzicol...so sad!

But anyway, I have a hard time affording my medication so I am thinking of switching to Lialda since it has a PPA program.

One more thing...did you get side effects with Lialda?  I'm a bit nervous to switch because I'm afraid my body won't take to it.  My body does quite well with Asacol.

I switched about a month ago with no problems.  Actually the Lialda is much more convenient as you only take it once a day.  I was on Asacol for 9 years.

I switched from Asacol to Lialda and I've been doing well. I also cut down the dose to 2400mg from 3600/4800. I also started 6mp which may be why I've been doing well, not sure what the key is, but I am thankful for the remission. The PAP program for Lialda is good. I get a months supply for $10. I think that's a $30 savings over what my insurance would charge without the PAP. It would be unaffordable if I had to pay $40, I pay $40 for Canasa and I don't even want to pick it up anymore, it's too expensive.

I switched form 4 Asacol 3x a day to 4 Lialda once a day and it seemed like I got worse, however, I was in the middle of a flare and had some stress in my life. It could be a coincidence. My doctor perscribed me Canasa (again) twice a day for a while-it has been a month and I am doing much better.

I switched a few years ago, no problems. So much more convenient with once per day dosing! Also, much less expensive than Asacol, for me anyway. I was paying $70/mo for Asacol, $40 for Lialda, and now I get three months for $80 with home delivery.

Thanks for all the tips. Do you guys have prescription coverage? I don't...just health insurance with a prescription drug discount. Sadly, if I had to buy Asacol for a month in USA I believe it would be OVER $1,000. :*(  I buy it overseas.

Anyway, I might switch...not sure.

Coolmom, glad you are better. I was in a flare last year when I started a new job. I'm definitely MUCH better now.

Notsosicklygirl...what is 6mp?

I take 3 Asacol 400 mg 3 x a day. I take 1 Canasa 1,000mg once a day.

My biggest hardship is affording my medication...at least at this time.

Responded in another thread, I made the switch after being hospitalized with pancreatitis. I was told the Asacol was to blame. Ever since the switch, I have responded better to the Lialda. I enjoy the convenience of taking the entire dosage at once instead of having it spread throughout the course of my day where the fear of missing a dose is there.

You know I always wondered that maybe one big shot of the medicine once per day was better than taking smaller amounts several times per day. I used to take regular Asacol and now take Asacol HD. Your colon is actually pretty large and in the scheme of things these pills are pretty small. I always wondered how two little bitty regular Asacol pills could possibly spread across the whole colon. It makes more sense that if you could cover a bigger part of your colon even if just once per day that this may be of more benefit that smaller doses which don't seem to possibly be able to cover much area, several times per day. Any thoughts anyone?

I responded much better to Lialda than I ever did on Asacol. I would say try it out! I take 4 Lialda every morning, and my body always absorbs them. That was not the case with the 8-12 Asacol I took daily.

I switched to Lialda a few years back. I responded better to it. Asacol gave me major gas - always bloated. As mentioned by others in the previous replies, Lialda is more convenient - I went from taking Asacol 2 pills, 3x day to Lialda 4 pills at once daily. I say you give it a try.

I called my Dr about switching yesterday, because I seem to pass asacol without it even releasing medicine often. The pills are soft, but more or less unchanged. Im also concerned about the plastic type of coating asacol has.

I went from asacol to lialda. Because of cost. I have insurance but the deductibles were to high. Lialda has the. Nice savings card to it. But I take two tablets twice a day. I don't have no side affects.

Yea the asacol ***holes got out of going generic by literally putting the asacol pill inside a gelcap. I got put on that new one when I was in the hospital with a flare. I saw a pic of it on here. I didn't know that I was taking it, until I shook the capsule and heard it. So I opened it and sure enough, inside was a pill that looked exactly like the asacol. That is such crap that they got away with that.

I spoke to my GI during my last exam about switching over to Lialda once I run out of my current Delzicol pills. I also explained why I no longer wanted to use the pills from that scumbag company.

Anyway, I am under a month's supply of Delzicol now so I called in my prescription for Lialda yesterday. In about three weeks I will be transitioning over to Lialda. It will be interesting to see if it has any effects on my current state.
