why do we have so much gas

Wondering why we UCers have so much gas all the time. Anybody know the science behind it?

Gas forms when bacteria in your colon ferment carbohydrates that aren't digested in your small intestine. These microbes are in dysbiosis with UC, so the digestion is off. Also with UC the movement of food through the system may be speeded up and/or stalled. This allows for either more incomplete digestion, or excess fermentation.

There is more gas, but gas may be felt more too. With UC there is a damaged bowel to one extent or another and sensitivity is enhanced.

I also think gas is remembered more. I am sure I quickly forgot about lots of farts before I got UC. Once the farts became sharts I remembered and reared each one.

For one thing dysbiosis, of course it all depends on what you might be eating.
And perhaps depending on the dysbiosis, the bugs are eating you, your mucus,bile acids.
Also if there is a problem with digestion in the small intestine then there might be too much nutrient escaping digestion and getting to the colon for the bacteria to eat.

Interesting, so would you say when we are in remission our digestion is goes back to normal or are our bowels just more reactive than most other people regardless. I feel like even in remission i always fart a little more than most people but when i am flaring there is definitely way more gas produced.

I have an additional theory. If our colons are inflamed then the opening is actually narrower than normal, which kind of makes a wind tunnel effect.

I would guess that even in remission your gut microbes are not quite where they should be.

I am in remission but I still get terrible gas often. I would say it's a UC thing but I have a lot of friends who are just as bad or worse and they don't have UC. I think people fart more than they let on.

Yea, ive been taking rowasa and my farts have changed from smelling like sulfur to plain ol farts from back in the day. The only thing is, I am soooo bloated and I fart all day. Its crazy. Maybe its the oatmeal and the whole oat bread ive been eating.

I am not entirely sure that the extra flatulence is a downside of uc, rather I'd call it a plus. As there is nothing better to torture the wife and my buddies with; absolutely heinous farts and in abundance. tongue

When I was flaring, I had some pretty nasty gas, but I'm back to normal now that I'm in remission. That said, I can be horribly gassy at times, but I can easily trace it to foods that have always caused me problems (beans, ham, sweet potatoes, brassicas).

There is a pattern here,sulfur farts.
Sulfate reducing bacteria at work.
Pre UC, about 6 months, my son could clear a room with terrible smelling sulfur farts,then bam UC.

Excess fat in the diet,making taurine conjugated bile part or all of the problem, especially from the concentrated

milk fat used in some foods,or perhaps we are unlucky and have too many SRB's growing in our mouth and intestines.

OM, I also remember that I had some really nasty farts when I was pregnant with my son (which was pre-UC). I just figured it was one of those fun pregnancy things for me. Guess maybe not.

My son was also born three weeks early. I think that I might have been mildly flaring, and that's what caused it.
