I was diagnosed with UC in April of 2013, and am currently not on any medications. A month ago, I was told I have C. Difficile, a bowel infection, and am currentlyon the antibiotic Vancomycin. My periods have been irregular lately, going as long as 17 days late, and I was thinking about going on birth control to regulate them. However, I was doing some research and found that many people think birth control made their symptoms worse. Has anybody experienced anything, either good or bad, while taking birth control with UC? Thanks!

My gynocologist says its an individual thing. Some get worse some better and others it makes no difference. I am currently on birth control and I think it does keep my hormones at a nice even level and could possibly help.

I haven't noticed any changes in my symptoms after going on birth control.

I used to think maybe it was somehow related to my developing IBD but now I have been in remission while on birth control pills for quite a while so I don't think it's related. I did however switch from estrogen pills to straight progestin. I also don't get a period becuase I take pills everyday. Maybe that helps with period related symptoms.

on the pill, i dont get periods and haven't had an issue, i'd call that win win! my gp just said as long as I don't have severe d or vomit soon after then it's fine otherwise she'd have given me the implant.

I take the pill continuously so I don't get a period. I've been on it since well before developing UC, so I don't know how starting the pill may affect you. I know that if I do have a period, the cramps throw my gut out of whack too. That's why I don't :)

I use the nuvaring- I have continued to use it because it makes my periods extremely light. If they are too heavy I always worry about severe anemia during a flare-- blood coming out both ends!
