What has worked for you? Something must stop the D and the urgency you would like to think but my 21 year old son hasn't found it so far. Cc herbal only helped a bit. All advice gratefully received.

I know I used to give my kids rice and bananas to help with D. But unfortunately that doesn't always work for us. Some of use Immodium sparingly, or fiber supplements. Unfortunately, the true cure is time and patience. Once a flare is settled, the D slows or stops.

For a person with a healthy colon, the BRAT diet works. For those of us with UC unfortunately we need medication. I had chronic diarrhea for over 2 years. I tried every diet in the book and couldn't find relief. Best of luck to your son.

The SCD recipe that agrees with me most is either acorn squash (and nothing but) or banana pancakes (1/1 ratio of egg and mashed banana cooked on a pan, eaten with honey). Keep in mind, if I was in the middle of a flare, this diet could take like 4 or 5 days to kick in. If he's not willing to dedicate that type of time to healing, he'll just be sick and get sicker (i suppose that's not a guarantee, but likely). I hope the best for him.

There's also something to be said for a pure living environment. I was living with my parents (who didn't exactly get along) and sister, going to school, and working, and was sicker than ever. Now that I live on my own, I'm able to control the simplicity of my life; I find this helps a ton. Also getting into nature. It could be just the fact that I love nature, but getting out and doing what you love will put your whole body in tune with itself. At my sickest point, I was still trying to go backpacking and hike. It may have not been the best idea to be so far away from a hospital, but MAN, it healed my mind at the very least. Nothing's worse than sitting around glooming upon the thought that there's something "wrong" with me.

What exactly is his status regarding flare?
Your signature shows extreme flaring, hospital, etc...but how is he now?
How often does he have diarrhea?

Did the docs ever try TPN on your son? That is a complete bowel rest with nutrition administered by IV and/or port for a period of time. It used to be given in-hospital only, but more recently they have set it up at patient's home with visiting RN monitor. / Old Hat (33 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Yes, he has been really ill in the past. We have managed to keep him out of hospital since March last year. He's just tapering off an 8 week course of pred as his crp was spiking to 94 and now the urgency and D are returning. He has put on weight on the pred which is good as he got so thin. He is starting to take mezavant and he has salofalk enemas which he just doesn't fancy trying. He is gluten free, and is on ldn and cc herbal. Would love to find a way to stop the urgency though. He is playing lots of sport and copes really well. Thanks all.

So he's never tried the rectal meds yet...he should at least make the effort equal to yours. If he's flaring..the imodium should be used SPARINGLY. If he's not flaring..you'd need the ok from the doc. He's old enough to realise be should be at least trying the enemas.

Get Activated charcoal and give your son 5 capsules or tablets in the 1st dose and then 2 every 2 hours untill the diarrhea slows down, after that low the dose to 2 every 4 hours, to 1 every 5 hours. Keep 1-2 capsules/tablets every 4-5 hours for the next 2 days to make sure he got it under control.
Feed him chicken broth with white rice and plain baked/boiled potatoes and some herbal teas, especially ginger tea ( 6 thing slices of the fresh ginger, pour hot but but not boliing water over ginger, let it set covered for 10 min. and let him drink it as many cups as he wants).
As for CCHerbal, I have tried it too, but I find the different Chinese formula is better, at least for me. It is Pinellia Combination 628 (Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang), sold by Sun Ten company, check it out and you might be able to find it in your local herbal health food store or Chinese store. This formula was tested in China on the people with UC with a very good result. At least it is worth trying.

Hello Mr lookfure.
My problem is Rosacea and not the colitis. I did a stool test that show i have low benefecial E.COLI.
Do you think Mutaflor probiotic could help me ???
Thanks so much for your time.

Bowel rest briefly, then rice & chicken broth when i resumed food.
On occasion a little Imodium.
One more thing: staying well hydrated is essential.
