I would not go under the knife until she turns 18, because she will be eligible for many studies once she turns 18, including FT.
I'd prefer to go for surgery, many trials fail and some of the trials have placebos.... you could be "kicking the can down the road" At 18 I'd rather have certainty in my life so I could be free of meds and do what I wanted without having to worry about
UC. That is just my opinion.
If the top IBD GIs in the country are recommending Surgery then it's probably advisable to consider it.Of course, its your choice but its not your life, its your daughter's (and I get it that you are doing everything in your DD's best interest). I would not (and do not) participate in double blind trial. I go for only
open label trial so that I know I am getting drug and not sugar pill.
T. Suis study in NYU is
open label, except the duration. Half the time, you will get placebo and I think thats fair trial. If they find that it was useful to you get, you get treatment for next few months to hour at their expense.
There are few other drugs in the pipeline that have some promise. Unless you really see how ostomy folks live, you do not want to decide. I seriously considered it last year when I was in super bad shape and talked to my GI. She was blunt, how do you think it is going to help? Who is going to give you a guarantee that you will be all well afterwards? Do your research and you are still young (I am 35) and you have lot of life ahead, were her words.
That said, I understand you are desperate for solution for your DD, can not see her pain. Please take it positively, I am not critical of your decision. DS has autism but I can feel your pain very well. His test revealed that he could get UC too. Not best place to be in this world when your son already has a condition where there is no solution and being told that he could face other condition where there is no concrete solution.
A simple question, do you know her Vit D levels?
