Curious: those of you on IBD Antispasmodics

I'm curious what the symptoms of the spasms you are getting with your IBD are like. Is it a you just finish pooping thing, and then you have to go again like as soon as you're pulling up your pants kinda thing? Or is it a few minutes after wrapping up a bm, you have to rush to the bathroom again kinda thing? Certainly those of us with uc have feelings like we have to poop, we get to the toilet and nothing happens, which is annoying too.

I am just wondering if all of us with uc have some sort of spasm thing going on (many bathroom urges early in the am), or whether it is just an IBD thing that is totally unrelated to what I am experiencing. Thanks!

Mine may be more IBS than IBD because food intolerance seems to be the reason for my multiple BM's and the spasms designed to get non-tolerated stuff OUT. This does not happen right after eating, it happens the next morning when my gut is in elimination mode.

I finally figured out that the one fruit I was still eating was causing this problem. Probably because pears have sorbitol, a natural laxative. Other fruits have it too, such as cherries.
"Normal" guts would not spend the next morning having a fit of spasms but my gut wants me to know "do not eat this again".

I only had anti-spasmodics prescribed once, about two years ago, when I was getting abdominal cramps unrelated to bowel movements -- I can't recall exactly what it was like now, except to say that it wasn't at all like urgency. But I totally understand your question because I wondered myself before that time -- and then when I needed them, it was like, oh yeah, this is different.

Yes to all the questions but with cramping too. Even though I am in remission from my Uc, I still have some other gut issues and my most active times are in the morning. When you wake up, so does your colon which makes you use the restroom more.

I've not had that unless I was flaring. The antispasmodics will help lessen the spasming and cramping somewhat.

It also helps me with nausea.

I get cramps an inch below naval point and feels like intestine/colon is twisting continuously. The urge to BM is CONSTANT and the peristalsis feels so fast that there is lot of stuff that needs to be excreted but something is preventing it from reaching down. In reality, there is nothing there except blood. I cuddle on the throne because I just can not sit.

slightly offtopic but deltaforce, have you tried the squatty potty? It's not as hard on your body as actually squatting, but you sit on the throne and then rest your feet on a shelf a few inches off the ground, creating the squat posture. I really appreciate it. I heard about it here and then noticed that my best friend has something like it in his bathroom, and that kind of normalized it for me, since he doesn't have UC. Supposedly it's the better posture in any case.

I just thought of it because of your remark above.

deltaforce - I am experiencing the exact same thing right now. Although I feel the cramping and urgency in my lower back. It's terribly hard to ignore - last night I was woken every hour with it - but then when I get to the toilet it's just bloody mucus.

Bentyl made me feel so sick it was like I was dying and did nothing about urgency apparently Librax is superior.

Can anyone tolerate Bentyl ? Flew like symptoms fever, malaise.

Bentyl did not do that to me but then again, it didn't seem to help me much either. I am now taking Levsin generic. I think it is better than bentyl but I still wonder how much it actually does.

@Janey,

Me being a cheapskate, I will not pay for squatty potty, instead I got Ikea children's step stools and they do pretty similar job and I use them daily.

Bentyl helps me with these symptoms. Honestly, its been a godsend medication for me. If a little pain persists after Bentyl goes into effect, I pop in 325mg of Acetaminophen and that solves the problem.


Offnote, those who do not use N-Acetyl cysteine and take acetaminophen should look into it. Acet* depletes glutathione, which is most potent antioxidant in our system, and NAC is a precursor of glutathione. I take 500mg 2X a day, every day.
