I just wanted to say how happy I was to come across this forum. It will be nice to speak with people that experience the same issues I have. I've been looking for a support group, but wasn't sure where to start without being completely embarrassed about my sickness.

I'm in the middle of a flare-up right now and have been to the bathroom more times than I care to count. shocked I'm on prednisone until my scheduled colonoscopy November 25th. I was wondering if there are any other ways to stop the diarrhea and ease the cramping?

I also think I have a hemorrhoid coming on!!

Welcome. Are you still on Asacol? Imodium can be helpful if you are having diarrhea but I wouldn't take it once your stools start to be formed.

Heating pads or the sticky charcoal heating pads work good for cramping. Imodium works good for D but be careful because it can cause a rebound effect if you're flaring. However, many here do take Imodium on a daily basis...I've been told by my GI I can take one a day but unfortunately I can't tolerate it.

Welcome! I'm pretty new here as well. I have had UC for a long time, but was not aware of this forum until I stumbled across it.

My last flare was about two years ago. I found the pain to be almost unbearable at times. I agree that a heating pad works wonders. Also, my GI told me that lying down can help slow down the diarrhea and I found this to be true. I'm assuming because it takes the pressure off.

Also, a low residue diet helped me during my flare because it helps you to have less bowel movements.

Yes; I’m still on the Asacol HD 800mg twice a day. I just started taking Metamucil yesterday to see if it would help. I read somewhere that it can help bind up the colon during a flare-up.

I try to avoid the bathroom like the plague, but it's just not working for me right now. LOL!

I forgot to ask is there anything that can be taken for all the blood I'm passing in my stool during this flare-up? I'm just wondering if there is anything I can ask my GI dr to perscribe me.

Hemorrhoid/irritation stopper:

1. Clean w/water
2. Clean with some witch hazel on tissue
3. Clean with small amount of Vaseline

Ask your doctor for mesalamine enema Rx (Rowasa is the brand name in US). This will really help stop bleeding. Don't settle for using suppositories. These can help later on when things are under control but the mes. enema is the good stuff.

Google on this site for tips on how to adjust to using it. Well worth your effort.

As imagardener says the enema's are amazing! (didn't think I'd ever write those words) heat pads, wheat bags, hot water bottle. and some form of distraction llike a book in the bathroom to take your mind off the pain when you're in there.
