[off topic] Are you for/against vaccinations?

Everyone should also know that you are NOT REQUIRED to give your infant a vaccine for Hep. B. You can delay that vaccine until they start school. This is what we did with Prevnar - we delayed the vaccine until each baby was 1 year old. I delayed Hep B.

Parents who take the time to understand the vaccine schedule and analyze their own choices and risks are perfectly able to modify the suggested schedule to fit their family's needs, without saying no to a specific vaccine.

That's just it, some researchers believe these vaccines were NEVER properly tested. They should have given the control group something innocuous such as saline solution or something. But from the studies I have seen the control groups were given vaccines without the virus but with all the mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum, etc. that is in real vaccines.

There has never been a study with a control group consisting of the pre-1983 vaccine schedule.

Worst case scenario - I wonder what percentage of people with Autism feel they got it from a vaccine? It's probably about 1% of all vaccinations at the most.

Obviously, there are many theories as to the increase in autism cases and without a doubt additional diagnoses made that wouldn't have been made in the past are a contributing factor. (kind of like with UC?)

However, I don't think anyone will deny that there has in fact been an increase.

While vaccines are one such theory, another one that I find more plausible and heard from a radiologist is that the increase is associated with all the ultrasound done during pregnanacy. 30 years ago, ultrasounds were not the standard and when they were done, they used very weak signals. Obviously, now they are done all the time as a standard part of pregnancy. The machines have much stronger signals and some women have them as frequently as weekly.

Sure, ultrasound was deemed to be safe many years ago, but there is no denying that it is energy and no one really knows what affects on fetal neural development the energy has. However, this radiologist is convinced that if you want to find your source for autism increase, look there.

Babe, there's no demonstrative evidence that the rise in autism is because of vaccinations and not because of increased awareness of the spectrum, acceptance of autism as a legitimate issue, and increased diagnosis. Plus, calling something an epidemic when it isn't a communicable disease is kind of silly.

Kazbern- we also delayed hep b and prevnar with our boys. The pedi at the hospital suggested we delay hep B before I said anything since I didn't have hep and was breast feeding. We also held off on varicella until they started daycare when they were 20 months old.

Just food for thought:
We still don't know what caused it, but my youngest was hospitalized with kawasaki's disease 10 days after he received his last round of "off schedule" vaccines. He could have simply been exposed to a virus and his body over-reacted but our pediatrician reported it to the national reporting service. For those who have never hear of KD, it is an auto-immune response in which the body attacks vascular tissue and is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children. I don't know that the vaccines caused this, but there is a part of me that has to wonder....

Final thing I'm going to say about vaccines + autism because it's really mind-boggling that this is even a debate ...

Vaccines and other medications are intensely and repeatedly studied before they're used in the general population. Vaccines alone have been improved over the years; the vaccines we're using today are different from the original incarnations of them.

Additionally, because vaccines are SO WIDELY USED, it's something that the vast majority of people with autism have in common. When you're dealing with an illness or disorder, one of the first things you do is take a group of people who have it and ask, "What do you all have in common?"

But "We were vaccinated" is as helpful as saying something like, "My parents gave me Children's Tylenol when I had fevers as a kid." It's as helpful as saying, "I've been in a car." Specifically: It's not informative, and it doesn't actually indicate a link, or even a correlation, between the illness/syndrome and the activity or medication.

butte1: Benefit of the chickenpox vaccine is that you're less likely to get shingles as an adult. Not terribly upset that I got the chickenpox as a kid, but it IS pretty funny to me (like, "Huh! Weird!") that so many of my students never got the chickenpox.

But in seriousness now, I wasn't expecting that response. I do appreciate it and my respect for you has gone up. I do understand being in a rage so bad it clouds judgement, too. The focus of my rage is different, but it is there all the same.

Re the autism debate: Doesn't surprise me that this thread took that turn. The only saving grace is at least that fraudster, Andrew Wakefield, wasn't mentioned.

As for "vaccine overload", it's a flawed concept. You're not doing your kids any favours by delaying their vaccinations.

@Garylouisville - They make actual flu shots that don't have the thimerosol in them.

If thirmesol is so controversial and they can make shots without it, why don't they just make all shots without it?
