I've been given 2 choices for colonoscopy prep

I have the choice between these 2 (pico salax along with dulcolax pills that have to be taken for 2 days before drinking the pico) or moviprep (which the procedure/test booking clerk gave me already for free).

Which is better?  I've never used either (used to always use phospho soda and dulcolax (same day, not two days before drinking the phospho soda, if I recall correctly).

I never tried the pico salax but the Moviprep wasn't bad taste wise. Almost no taste actually. They give you flavor packs but I didn't use them. But there is A LOT to drink! I couldn't do the whole thing.

enfyre, I usually do a liquid diet for 2 days before prepping to stop any cramping (that phospho soda does cause) so if I use the pico, cramping might not be an issue...but thanks for the details regarding cramping and rash issues you had.

Red, although you couldn't drink the whole thing, did you finally start to "run clear" and be cleaned out enough for the test?

I've never used either, but my choices are between pico silax and citro-mag. I've always done the citro-mag and I find it absolutely brutal. So next month I am going to try the pico silax. If you end up doing that one, let me know how you get on.

Yes, I was going clear at a 3/4's of the bottle. I just couldn't chug down the rest.

Is pico silax available in the US? Is this the prep that Canadians used to rave about?

For my next prep, I'm going to coat my bottom with calmoseptine cream, it's non prescription product kept behind the pharmacy counter. It's am amazing product!

I usually don't / can't finish the full prep either. There is a point where it is just needless torture. If you're able to prepare ahead of time, eat low res for a few days, etc. it isn't that big of a deal, if you're going clear.

I also drink as much water as I can stand at the last possible time for clear fluids.

You've got to protect your bottom with something - A&D or Desitin will help a lot. My IBD specialist recommended hydrocortisone cream. I didn't have anything to use the time I had to prep in the hospital, and I had eaten regularly that day. That was a night with very little sleep!

I've done Moviprep and GoLytely at home. IMO the Moviprep tastes worse.

Moviprep is horrible. It was the worst prep I have done. Did it twice. The other sounds better.

Pico is the only one I've used. Doesn't bother me going down.

The moviprep is suppose to taste like lemon...if I go the pico salex route then I've been instructed to start taking the dulcolax 2 days before the pico, 3 days of prepping doesn't sound very appealing lol.

At least I've got some time to decide.

Faithmac, what exactly was horrible about moviprep, the taste, the trips to the can? I'd love details.

January 21 Red. And that's for an "urgent" one, the booking clerk tried to make me wait til Feb 4 and I had to remind her it was marked on the requisition from the GI as "URGENT" so she bumped someone else and got me Jan 21...he's away the first week of Jan and fully booked up for quite some time.

Movieprep is salty. I've done many preps. This one was hard to get down. My husband had to leave the room . I was gagging and throwing up in the sink. Lucky I made jello. For every gulp I swallowed some jello. I get the chills with just the thought. My GI at the time would not allow me to use anything else. He said that was the best for cleaning you out. I have to say that was true. All I have to say is it was bad!!!!! Salty lemon flavor, yuck:(

My sister was given the choice of having a colonic 3 hours before procedure. Sounds good to me. Expensive though! $175.00 in New York City.

I have to do golytely in a few weeks. is it terrible?

I haven't done either of the ones you were offered. I've done visicol pill prep and miralax/dulcolax.

I've done golytely. I think that was pretty bad too. It was a few years ago. The miralax one was the best. I think the golytely one you could pick a flavor. Discusting too. What was the one where you had to drink 2 small bottles of some salty crap. I think they took that one off the market.

My mom is doing Pico Salax, but not until about the same time as you.
I have only done citro mag, and I hate it. Not much to drink, but the cramps were horrid and the taste is wretched.

I always used to do the phospho fleet soda which taste like the sea, it's super salty and grosses me out but it was only two 45ml bottles of it...it used to cause cramping until I figured out to do a liquid diet for 2 days before drinking the prep, that stopped the cramping and made for much less cleaning out to be done too.

I'm not used to drinking a crapload of prep, but I was told to follow instructions for either prep given to me, and not to follow instructions on the boxes of the preps....they said for the moviprep to mix the powder into 8 oz of water, 2 times and to drink as much water in between and after both preps as possible.

i have always used Picco Salax and it works great. it doesnt make me feel nausious whatsoever and i find its pretty smooth. no issue whatsoever.

GoLytely isn't that bad. Mine this past week was unflavored, just put water in the big jug and go. 8 oz every 15 minutes until you're clear.

My sister does not have UC. I have never been offered that option. My friend is licensed to do colonics. It wouldn't cost me a dime. I should see if I could do that. :)

I was told to take Miralax for my colonoscopy prep.....was very cheap and worked extremely well! Didn't taste at all either!!

darn, I read tornado's post before Faith's and I thought this was going to be a breeze but now it sounds pretty awful again. I will let you guys know.

Maybe you won't think it's too bad? Everyone is different. I think they all suck!!!!!!! Some worse then others . Good luck:)
