Flex Sig. Scope: Sedation or awake? What'd you recommend?

At my follow up GI appointment today he scheduled me for a flex sig in 4 weeks to see if inflammation is gone (scheduled for 8 weeks after meds started). He said its my choice to sedate or not. What would you do?

i've only had one flex sig and i was awake. honestly, sedation isn't worth it! the test goes by so fast and i would've slept for hours after if i had chosen sedation. well, to be fair, i wasn't offered sedation- the doctor/nurse said it wasn't necessary since it's a short look.

I've had 2 flex sig's and I was not sedated for either. It was fine, with a flex sig they don't go as far. Everyone is different with what they can tolerate but I think you'll be OK.

I've also had 2 colonoscopies and had sedation and will tell you I won't have sedation again as I don't react well and it makes me extremely ill. My hubby never gets sedation for his colonoscopies and said its fine. Again, everyone is different.

Never had sedation and got through them ok. When you are awake you can tell him to hurry it up! Its uncomfortable but less hassle not to have to go under, get a ride, recover etc.

Awake.

I've had two and was awake for both, but I will most likely request sedation next time.

The first was fine. Uncomfortable obviously, but it was over quickly and not worth being sedated for.

The second was also over quickly and uncomfortable, but this one was painful too. I hated it. The nurse applied pressure where the scope was and that helped, but it was still not anything I care to go through again.

I had ONE flex sig awake. NEVER AGAIN. I don't know if it was because I was sick UC-wise or what... but it hurt like hell. It felt like HORRIBLE cramps in my gut, and when I was done I almost expelled the contents of my colon in the hallway running to the bathroom.

I had done it awake to save some money by not having drugs... but never again. Seriously.

I had a flex sig last week & I was sedated, my bottom was so raw from the prep ,no way to stick something up there.
Afterwards I had diarrhea so bad went in the bed !what a mess!

I've had about 1/2 dozen of those in 2013, all of which I was awake for. It's a 5 minute procedure, a little uncomfortable but no big deal. I don't know why anybody would want sedation for such a brief procedure, boggles the mind. The prep is always worse than the sig itself. A Sig hurts only if you are in the worst of a flareup and badly inflammed. Otherwise it doesn't.

If you have a driver, I would opt for sedation.

A Flex-sig is not painful and even if you need biopsies, these are not painful either, you will just feel pressure. However, it's a procedure that isn't entirely comfortable either, you will have the probe inserted and feel manipulation but again, not sharp pain or even dull pain.

Are you female? If so, imagine a pap that can take 5 minutes.

If I knew my insurance would cover sedation or if it was only a minimal extra charge, and I had a driver who was willing to drive me, no rush with their particular schedule, I know in a heart beat I'd opt for sedation.

Also if you are raw inside from UC, definitely sedate. I don't have the UC dx but take it from the Vets with it, opt for sedation.

Take along a XL or overnight maxi pad to wear home. Bring a towel from home to sit on in the car too. These are all precautions, you may not even need the pad or towel but if so, you'll be glad you had them.

Well, I have a driver and it doesn't cost any extra for sedation. When I was sedated for my colonoscopy I reacted fine to it and felt normal afterwards, so no fear there. I think I'm going to opt for sedation. I think awake my nerves/anxiety will get the best of me. I'm a wimp, lol, it's ok, you can say it

by sedated, do you mean out completely or a light sedation such as pleasantly stoned?

If you're not comfortable with the procedure, request what has you feeling better about the test.

I agree. I wasn't offered sedation, but I wouldn't see why? The entire flex sig process is less than 5 minutes.
