Hello,
My GI doctor prescribed me mesalamine enemas on Monday and I started taking them on Tuesday. I am not sure if it's a coincidence but since taking them it seems like feelings of urgency have increased. I'm not sure if that means that my colitis is worsening though, because at the same time bleeding has stopped and my stool is formed (though doesn't at all look "normal" yet). She told me to call her on Monday to let her know if my condition hasn't improved or is worsening and if so, I will have a colonoscopy done next week.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Thank you for any input,
Anna

Urgency eventually lessens, try not to worry about
that as of yet.
Looking forward to hearing how your scope goes next week.
Are you also on an oral 5ASA?

If you're talking about
first thing in the morning after using one, then yes, I had problems with urgency when I first started using them. Now that I'm in a really stable remission, I only occasionally have increased urgency the morning after. But I never had problems with all-day urgency due to enemas.

Good to hear. She has prescribed me a month's worth so I still have a ways to go. Once I am in remission I am considering staying on the enemas maybe twice a week for maintenance. Anything to avoid going into another flare.
I guess I should have the scope, last time I had one was last August. I'll see how I feel on Monday, but I would really love to know what's going on with my body at the moment. I really want to know if anything has changed over the last year.
Yes, I'm taking 4 tablets a day at the moment. I think I will keep taking that much until I'm done with my month's supply of enemas, then decrease to 3. I will never, ever attempt to go down to 2 again though.

I highly recommend you stay on enemas even when in remission. I stayed on them nightly until I had been feeling totally normal for about
a month -- I didn't want to take ANY chances -- and then I went to every other night for a 2-3 weeks, then dropped to twice a week. If I'd had any problems during that process, I'd have gone back up to nightly, but I did fine.
Also, I wouldn't mess with the oral med dose until you've tapered to where you want to be on the enemas. I think it's risky to try to decrease both at once.

That's true, it may be a bit risky. Maybe I'll make an appointment with my GI for when I'm finished with my enemas, let her know how I'm doing and see what she recommends as far as decreasing meds at that time.

Absolutely listen what fruitgirl stated in her last post...I was going to say the same.
You should not decrease your oral meds until you're in a stable state and have already tapered the enemas to twice weekly and remained there for a while.
If you are to taper the orals...do it by one pill for a month. See how it goes, then maybe another.
The advice we're giving you is based on experience and information by doctors and other...with mesalamine, don't be in a hurry.
What's the extent of your UC...maybe put it in your signature as well so we don't have to ask. That has bearing on info/suggestions regarding meds, etc.

To be honest, I don't remember what my condition was, I will have to dig up that info when I get home. All I remember is that my entire colon was not affected as of August 2012.

Your symptoms at this point sound limited....yes, it's good to know exactly, because there are some of us who tend to ask lots of questions ;-)

How do you know if you are doing the enema correctly? Tonight was my third night trying it.

Well, if you're able to administer it without it hurting and are able to retain it, then you're fine. Definitely don't over think it!

I am able to retain my enema throughout the night, but I feel like inserting the enema is very painful. It seems like there is a plastic seam on the applicator that I can't see with my eye but boy can I feel it.

Use a lubricant. I've used steroid cream and most often I've used a hemorrhoid cream.
AWESOME you are retaining it...this is only the beginning of your newest relationship that might last a lifetime...

Okay I think the enema is causing me to go more often now. For the first time in about
two weeks I woke up in the middle of the night with urgency to go to the bathroom, though it seems like it was just the enema that was excreted. Now I went to the bathroom for the second time today. I usually go twice but not until the afternoon, between 2-4pm. I went today at 12 for the second time, first time when I woke up at 8pm. This seems strange to me, my diet is the exact same still, nothing has changed except the enema. There's no blood, stool seems formed but soft but there is only small pieces or thin ribbon like.
I'm probably just being paranoid but yikes it I'm worried that its getting worse. :(

The first enema I was prescribed (entocort) made my tenesmus worse. The meslamine helped me a lot though once I got on that instead. Might be this one just doesn't work for you.

I've found that the urgency (in the absence of inflammation) is due to the liquid in your colon. Give it 1 - 2 hours and your colon will absorb the liquid, leaving just the medicine. After that, there is no more urgency.

If the urgency is to the level that you can not hold enema, consider Bentyl an hour before administration. That will give enough time for enema to stay locally and do some job.

You are being a bit paranoid...and although understandable, just tough it out, and let the meds do their work. All the suggestions/advice/feedback hold true.
I remember my husband saying to me during the first few months after I started meds "why do you seem to be getting worse than better??". I responded that I'm not actually, just having some different symptoms.
All my doc said was "be patient"....
My question now is...how much Omega are you taking and when?
Are you taking any probiotics? q

Well, yesterday and today have been okay so far. I couldn't really go out yesterday and when I did it was just a little bit and runny... no blood, which is good.
Today I went in the morning twice. First time I went it was all diahrrea, no blood though. I brushed my teeth then had to go a second time almost immediately... and it was formed. So strange!
I take omega-3 whenever I can remember, once a day with a meal. I do take probiotics, I don't remember the brand but it's 50 billion and it's refrigerated.

I am becoming so frustrated though because already my parents are trying to pressure me to get back down onto three pills. There is no way I want to do that until I have no more symptoms!! It's way too soon!
