Anyone taking Acyclovir for UC?

Anyone taking Acyclovir for UC? I was hospitalized twice over the last two weeks (8 days total) and my GI put me on Acyclovir, having a hunch that I may have a viral infection. My fever has quit spiking so I assume it's helping whatever infection I have. Just wondering if I'm the only one who's been put on this medication for UC. Thanks!

I have never been on Acyclovir for UC, but have used it for Herpes outbreaks. I have never heard of it being used for UC . So..do you think it is helping??

I researched this a lot back in the day I thought my UC was being caused by the Epstien Barr Virus. There is no way to destroy the EBV and from everything I read going down this route the antivirals were going to make my problem worse, not better so I never pursued it. If your problem really is a virus that can actually be irraticated then you might have a shot. In any event please let us know how it goes. It is an out of the box idea but is worth a try. Docs need to think outside of their comfort areas.

I got Acyclovir when I was having shingles which I believe was a side effect from Remicade. It had nothing to do with UC. At that time I was in remission.

Either way, I hope you get better soon.

Acyclovir gave me terrible gastritis which led to a couple of weeks of diarrhea.

It's not used for UC unless you have a Herpes infection. Were you tested positive for CMV (cytomegalovirus)?

I was not tested positive for CMV or Herpes or anything like that. I believe he's just going on a hunch that it might be a viral infection and is using the Acyclovir to treat it. The only symptoms I have that points to a virus is fever, headache, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, all of which are also UC symptoms. I stated in my initial post that the fever spikes had stopped but they're back. Only up to 100.8 though. Not 102-103 like it was in the hospital.

I just wonder why he is treating me with this medication if there's no solid evidence I have a viral infection?? Ugh!!

YES! I take acyclovir for UC and it WORKS! YES YES YES ! I had never heard of that before, I have been on about 13 different meds... I had no effect from any of them or in some cases, I slllooowwlly and I mean slowly got better. I was one step from surgery fighting it. Then I got something that felt like a shingle so I started mega coding acyclovir. By that evening no blood and I was in a very BAD flare. Two days later healed.

I took acyclovir everyday for two years then stopped. A few days went by and bam started a flare. Drugs, enemas, hospitals... Thankfully I got a cold sore and asked for acyclovir. Got it added to my iv and ban! All better in one day...

This time I put myself in a flare... Some things were working, iv glutathione is great but my flare kept coming back and getting worse. Two days of acyclovir and I am brand new!

Please tell your doctors. This is a miracle for some people! My doctors don't believe me but luckily since I have shingles, I just keep on my acyclovir.
