Are mashed potatoes and rise good for UC?

Plain mashed potatoes and white rice are what got me through the first month of my flare without starving!

Eating cold will increase the RS, but even getting food into your system is important when you are first flaring so warm is good too! :)

I ate that with chicken breast for a couple of my flares and failed experiments. Otherwise I would of starved. I did eat more of the potato than the rice though. I am a potato freak! I made my mashed P with organic or homemade chicken broth and just salt instead of dairy at the time of flare.

What is the resistant starch content of these things which have been cooked and gotten cold versus these very same things which have been warmed up as leftovers?

I thought I had a good understanding of resistant starches other then why they need to be eaten cold.

just eat them...they're not BAD for UC.

I have no problems with either....hot.

I don't think the issue is with if UCers have a "hard time" with them hot or cold. From what I understand when eaten hot, the amount of resistant starches in most foods with it is greatly reduced (thus not reaping all the benefits). I'm sure the amino acid chain is "broken" when heated...but haven't quite figured out all the science behind it.

Reading comprehension. It's not about getting ill from them, it's about getting the most benefit from them....and I want the form I'm going to get the most benefit from (apparently uncooked). There is also nothing wrong with wanting to understand the why.

The RS content of cooked potatoes and rice, even cold, is pretty minimal as to not both worrying about it. If you want real RS content, you'll need to eat potato starch powder or green bananas or beans.

Cooked potato is one of the easier carbs to digest.

Nothing wrong with potatoes (both cooked and cooled). We've been eating them for thousands of years with no issues.

Ok, don't eat them....they're baaad for you. You'll die and your butt will fall off. You'll have baaad bacteria and your colon will blow up like a balloon and you'll never get into remission. Even if you look at them, you'll get much worse.

Quincy- if you read ( and comprehend) the later discussions, not one person said ANYTHING about them being bad for you or not eating them. Some foods are higher in resistant starches (studies show resistant starches are are ally good for UCers due to the byproduct butyrate) when served cold vs cooked. If I am going to get MORE benefit from eating them cold then I will...I don't need your permission. However this is a forum for discussion as to why certain things work and others don't. There really is no reason to be so brash...

There is zero debate here if they are good or bad for you...which is what you keep harping on.

What does are they OK to eat for UC mean to you? either they're good or bad? Fine or not fine? good or not good?

Bad is a common term here, excuse the fact I used it here.

Butyrate....helpful to have...many ways to get it. Heaven forbid if one eats hot potatoes or rice.

The OP was asking Bad/Good but then the thread went in a RS direction.
Since the OP never said anything about RS, I also directed my response as a Good/Bad answer and tried to shift away from the RS since the OP is obviously new to diagnosis and probably has no idea what RS is :D

well EG, the op needs to know about rs cuz it's the bomb (or whatever it is that kids are saying these days ) - at least today anyway :-)

Cranky is a good word...I guess mate the stick up her booty is an attempt to plug it up and avoid spewing poo everywhere...I just let mine flow as it pleases, much more freeing
