I'm currently very confused. I was diagnosed with UC after I had a Colonoscopy two weeks ago, However my GI did not started me on medication or anything, As soon as my colonoscopy was over he spoke with my mom for less than 2 minutes while I was still sleeping and told her that he saw that I have 'Mild Ulcerative Colitis'. I was so confused because everyone has to take medication for that so I spoke to my family doctor and he started me with mesalazine. Last friday he called me and spoke to me for literally 3 minutes and said that the biopsy results where there and in the results didn't show that I was inflamed and everything came negative and he said that I need to speak with my GI... the problem I have is that my GI won't speak to me until next month and I stopped taking mesalazine cause my family doctor said it. If someone has colitis is it supposed to show in the biopsy? or is it okay that the biopsy results came negative and it could mean I healed? :S I'M SO VERY CONFUSED! :(

I think some form of inflammation would be visible if you have colitis. ("litis" means inflammation) What are your symptoms? Does the mesalamine help with symptoms (if you have any)? I also suggest switching GI's. This one seems like a lost cause.

I agree with the above, not a very helpful GI. If he thinks you have UC, he should start you on medications. Try and get a second opinion on your biopsy results.

However, if you are not on your medications any longer and feel totally fine right now, that would be great :)

Yes, more info on symptoms please.
UC does show in biopsies.
I am amazed he didnt start you on any meds after your colonoscopy and see in what he thought was uc. Absolutely amazed.

Also... if your biopsies are back and your doctor said to talk to the GI... call his office, talk to his assistant, go to his office... whatever you need to do. Keeping you in the dark for the next month is NOT an option.
Seriously... its not okay to have a colonoscopy and not be talked to about it for over a month.

My colorectal surgeon also didnt tell me squat after my colonoscopy... but she did send a a prescription in for mesalamine and scheduled a 30 day follow up appt.

I really hate how crappy doctors are after first diagnosing! Ugh!

that sounds like a dream come true, GI tells you you have UC based on what he saw and you start on meds then wala! Biopsy results come back clear.

if i were you i would celebrate. You definitely do not want to be part of this club, as great as the people are, the disease just plain sucks.

Well, not to be a downer...but my first colonscopy was totally clear (including biopsies)...I was sooo happy and celebrated like you can't believe. Unf. after stopping the meds, (started them b/c the sigmoidoscopy showed inflammation/some ulcers) my symptoms came back and since had colonscopy that came back positive for UC. I hope this is not the case for you.

Either way though I would get a new GI doc asap.

while I assume he took the biopsies form areas where he saw mild inflammation, it is possible other biopsies might have told a different story. this could also mean you colitis is infectious and not UC, or that there is even a food allergy in play (that is not secondary to colitis).

Bottom line, you colon has the inflamed appearance of mild colitis, and it is not possible to make a diagnosis of UC at this time. This is good news / bad news. There is inflammation in your colon, but it is not well understood.

I would go heavy on anti-inflammatroy foods and try to manage inflammation and symptoms until you get further diagnostic work.

Thank you all so much for your replies, I'm not having any symptoms. although the first days after and before my colonoscopy I had bloody diarrhea and after I stopped taking the medication 3 days ago my abdominal pain was entirely gone. I'm definitely changing of GI. I can't believe doctors are like this. However I will go to the appointment to see my GI in February so he can explain things to me. I'm not celebrating or anything. I'm still eating very healthy. My family doctor said that I could still have colitis because he might had took the biopsy parts from a place where there was not inflammation and still have some parts that are and have Ulcerative Colitis :/ Thank you for being so supportive.
