Asacol and blood blisters in mouth

I take 800mgs asacol HD 3 X a day, for 4 years now, and I have been getting blood blisters on my tongue, or other areas of my mouth that burst and leave an extremely painful week or two to deal with...Anyone else get these???

You should have your blood platelet levels checked immediately. If they really are blood blisters then this is an indication that your platelet levels could be very dangerously low, low enough that fatal events could possibly happen. I used to have ITP and this was a very dangerous sign for me and they would hospitalize me. I mean this might not be it but if it is you are walking around in an extremely dangerous condition. Please check into it ASAP, like yesterday.

Jazzlyric, my gastro told me to alert her to any mouth sores because they are starting to suspect mouth sores are related to the start of flares or the progression of the disease. She was specific with this because I don't have the normal UC symptoms (blood, mucus, urgency) and she needs me paying attention to any clues that may indicate things are getting worse for me. I should have asked her for more information.

I hope your platelet count comes back fine and that you get it figured out soon. With my disease my platelets have remained elevated. I didn't realize they could be low, too. There are so many issues to deal with when it comes to UC.

Most UC'rs don't have to worry about low platelets but this can be a side effect of some of the meds, particularly Sulfazine.

Ive been getting this for 3 years now, and its always right after I eat salty items, or hot foods...I get my blood checked regularly and its always ok so far....Thanks for the input...

I used to get blood blisters on the inside of my lower lip when on Asacol. My bloodwork was always good also. I haven't had them since changing to Colazal and then Apriso. But I never correlated it to the Asacol tho...hmmm.

It always seems to hit wile Im chewing on salted sunflower seeds or eating something hot...After the blister brakes which is a few minutes after it develops, I end up with 3 to 6 days of pain as it heals...No excessive bleeding anywhere on my body, no brusing and so on, so it dosent seem to be platelet related, but Im still gonna get a blood test tomorrow to make sure...lol...Go figure all this stuff.

I take the same med, I get sores in my mouth but I don't think they are blood blisters. The sores are one of my flare symptoms along with small pimple looking bumps on my face, usually jawline, earrings will make my ear sore where the pierced hole is, eye makeup will make my eyelids sore. All of that is usually my first warning sign I'm going to start cramping and having looser stool.

No...these are blood blisters for sure, Iv been getting them for a few years now, and haven't had a flair up at all...

Are you having reactions to foods? Do you have any allergies (like to weeds, etc.?) There's something called oral allergy syndrome (you can google it). Basically your body is reacting when you eat something that is close to something else you are allergic to (like apricots are related to a certain type of tree pollen or something).

I have all kinds of allergies, and it always happens wile Im eating salted sunflower seeds, or hot foods...I might remember a few over the years happening wile I was sleeping...But it dose seem to be food oriented...Got a feeling the asacol might have something to do with it....Thanks for takinjg the time everyone to reply...

Are you sure you have UC and not Crohn's disease? I ask because Crohn's can cause blisters, ulcers, and inflammation anywhere in your digestive tract: mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. Where as, UC is limited to just the large intestine.
