Weaning of Uceris, symptoms increasing wants to use nicotine patch??

i added nicotine when i tapered pred because all my symptoms were returning and simponi wasn't cutting it. i feel great with the added nicotine. simponi seems to protect my appendix area but no where else haha

I wouldn't do the patch and Simponi. If I were in your shoes I would do the Uceris every day and start the Simponi  or the patch, but not both. I would continue with that and if she gets better then I would taper down the Uceris, just to make sure it was the Simponi or the patch working and not the Uceris. If you do too many things at once then you don't know what's working and what isn't.

Thanks, it's good to have some affirmation about the patch. Since it was my suggestion and not the drs I always second guess myself. Though the dr didn't say no. How long did it take to see results? She has already been on Remicade, it worked well and gave her two good years. It would be nice to postpone the simponi, but I don't know how long she can wait. I wish I thought of the nicotine sooner. Hope to get it tomorrow.
How long has your son been using the patch, and how long before you saw an improvement.

I started on the patch at 5 mg for 2 days, slight improvement, went to 10 and big improvement, now on 14 and doing well at day 31. I was never a smoker...have been on prednisone before and am still on my other meds. I posted earlier from an article that said patch use was least addictive; spray was most (after smoking cigarettes, that is) but that info was from study of former smokers. Not too much out there on UC and nicotine. Yes, I do cut the patches......Good luck!

since i only wear it half the day, i think i could get away with buying the 14 mg patches if i wore them all day. i just do the 21 mg and wear them half a day. i really like the slow release and i get no side effects from them.

the lozenges made me dizzy and nauseous because the nicotine was delivered in 4 mg over 30 min. just to fast for me.

Yes Old Hat it seems to be Nov.-Feb each time. The vitamin d was surprisingly normal.

The patch made her very I'll after a couple of hours, dizzy & nauseous. Im hoping she gives it another chance, I suggested just wearing it for 2 hours for a few days. I don't know if she wil continue.

Those symptoms of nausea and dizziness are symptoms of nicotine overload, like when people try smoking for the first time. Try starting very small and working up, the body adjusts quite soon.

Yes the spray is more addictive, since it delivers a nicotine shot immediately each spray, and it's handy to take around. I liked it, and I'd take it instead of other things, except the HCL and alcohol in it irritates my gut. The issue with lozenges and gum is that they all contain mannitol/sorbitol/xylitol etc., which are very problematic in laxative effect.

Hi, I'm new here and hope to provide what ever support or information I can. It's hard reading your posts concerning what you are dealing with either personally, or with your child. I've not dealt with any UC issues for a long time but remember when it was active in my gut, it was horrible.

Returning to cigarettes was my choice of 'medication'. Offered heavy drugs or surgery by the doctors, it was the easier choice at the time. And sure enough, it worked. I'm just hoping now that the smoking will not cause issues that complicate my health later on.

I am thankful to God for each day no matter what happens, I'll continue to work hard while I can, and hope everyone here finds rest and relief.

The nicotine patches can definitely cause some problems when you first use them. I was a smoker and tried using them to quit once (before I had any gut problems). Even after smoking 2/3 pack a day for a few years the lowest dose patches had me throwing up after a few hours the first few days that I wore them.

Did you try cutting a 7mg patch in 1/2 to start with? My son would apply the 1/2 patch a couple hrs before bedtime, he'd get a little nausea, dizzy and tired but would then fall a sleep and be fine in the morning. It took several days at each dosage to adjust....just a suggestion.
