So how many of you get canker sores? I used to get them all the time as a kid. I haven't had them in years but now all of a sudden I have a massive outbreak!  2 weeks ago I had one so bad I went to the dentist, thought it was something with my teeth. Nope, it was a canker sore hidden way down by my tongue and gums. I had another one at the time too behind my lip. Those went away, now I have 2 more (and another feels like it's forming).

I know these can be a side effect of UC. But are they always a sign you are flaring? Or can you just get them anytime? I know my GI always asks me if I've been getting sores in my mouth.  I'll admit, my gut has been acting up for the past 2 days. No bleeding (which I never seem to have) but my BMs are more frequent and not as formed. And my gut is so bloated my pants are tight.  Also some pressure on my bottom, almost feels like a hemmie but I can't tell, I seem to get those alot though.   Feel like I have a slight cold. I've been super wiped out lately.

I have been tapering off the Mesalamine enemas from twice a day to once a day. I had gotten down to doing them nightly, with a 2nd dose during the day only every other day. 

Please I hope I'm not flaring back up now!

Yeah, I get those little ******s, and hate them. Do they correlate w/ flairs...well...I do seem to get them before I flair but just because I have one doesn't mean I will flair. I know that is confusing. I would say though since you are having other possible symptoms...I would hold off on tapering and maybe bump up a few enemas again. Also have you considered a steroid rectal such as Cortifoam? If you end up backsliding, this might be an option.

I really hope that you are not going to backslide and it is just a little bump in the road. This is such a frustrating disease. FYI, for those canker sores, I use Proxyl mouth rinse and a strange little product called Canker-Rid from Durham Bee Farm. Sounds strange- but is made from Bee stuff (lol) and I find it stays on alot better than the usual OTC stuff. Doesn't numb your whole mouth, but just the sore. Check out the reviews on Amazon.

I have used Cortenemas in the past. I'm hesitating asking for them again. I'm still having side effects from being on prednisone for a year, and I've been off since early November. I don't want to screw up my hormones anymore, last time I took the enema I actually had side effects! Hopefully doubling back up on the mesalamine enema will do something.

My dentist gave me something called 'Magic Mouthwash'. It has benedryl, mylanta and lidocaine in it. It totally numbs my mouth though so I hate using it! I hate feeling like I just had 10 shots of novacaine every time I use it. Can't tell if it helps at all. I might try that Canker-Rid. Although the ones way down in my gums I can't even see to put anything on them - those are the ones that benefit from the mouthwash. I thought of just going back to my mom's old remedy of using warm water with salt in it and swishing that around for a minute or two.

Yeah, I also got side effects from the Cortenemas. However I do fine w/ Cortifoam and also Anucort (steroid supps)....so just throwing it out there.

Yes, some people have mentioned Magic Mouthwash, as everyone at one point was posting there solution for these annoying canker sores. Can't hurt to try your mom's ole remedy, especially after eating to clean it out a bit. You are going to laugh when you read the reviews on Amazon for that product. I was totally skeptical, but it is pretty good. Anyway, good luck and keep us posted.

I had a terrible streak of canker sores a couple months back...wasn't feeling 100% but didn't think I was flaring by any means. Well, within a couple weeks of those I was in the hospital getting CT scans and scopes and had been flaring badly for quite a while. Definitely feel they were correlated and just one of the many ways my body was telling me something was going on. Wish I had a better anecdote to offer :(

That said, I am generally more predisposed to them. They are the worst--sorry you have to deal with them as well! Good luck.

I used to get them all the time as a kid. I definitely don't get them as often now but once in a while i will get one or two. I hate them. I haven't noticed mine having any link to flare ups.

Lysine pills help keep my canker sores at bay and when they flare up, a pharmacist told me once to save $ and make my own mouth rinse - equal parts hydrogen peroxide and warm tap water. Swish and hold the mixture where you have them, tilting your head if you have to, for about 10 seconds. Spit and repeat, about 5 or 8 times. Do this several times a day and especially at bedtime. There will be a film on your gums and the inside of your mouth from this rinse and overnight is a perfect time for extra healing.

I just had a major outbreak too. 3 at once and they were huge. I got them A LOT as a kid but I was worried that the three I had were indicating a flare starting but I feel ok. I tried the brush on Kanka stuff but I like the extra strength oragel the best
