Desperate!! I can't get Predsol Enemas in S.Africa. Is there an equivalent?

Hi everyone! I'm having a terrible flare at the moment and I can't get the medication I need. My GI says that the medication that puts me immediately into remission i.e. Predsol Enemas is no longer available in South Africa. Does anyone know if there is an equivalent?

He has suggested that I crush 6 x 5mg Prednisone tablets in 100ml distilled water and use this as an alternative morning and evening. I tried this last night but unfortunately it just doesn't work quite as well.

Does anyone know whether there are any other prednisone or prednisolone enemas available. Sometimes I feel as though my GI doesn't give me many options.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. smilewinkgrin

You might try to do a search for compounding pharmacies, they can do something for you.

I just did a quick Google search and there seems to be a lot of them. There is a special way to mix it, and the way you did won't work. Your dr can write a script for it.

The ones I have are generic, simply called Hydrocortisone enemas. Check with a pharmacist (chemist) there to see if there is any hc enema available.

Google "predsol enema equivalent"

Looks like online pharmacies sell:
"Predsol Retention enema equivalent to 20 mg prednisolone in 100 mL"

prednisone is more effective than cortisol because it has 4x the receptor affinity than cortisol. if you can't get prednisone enemas, you might try the cortisol enemas (sold as hydrocortisone). The volume is often the same (e.g., 50ml) but the mg of suspended steroid is higher to get the same effect.

Uceris (Budnisone) has 16x the receptor affiniy, so budnisone enemas might also work, but they are very expensive.

Thanks guys for all your advice. I spoke to a pharmacist over the weekend and he says the only enema available that he knows of is entocort (not sure of the correct spelling). I have tried this during abad flare a few years back but without success.

'Itsalwayssomething' mentioned an online pharmacy in Canada that would supply the Predsol enemas that I need. Are these pharmacies trustworthy. My biggest fear with ordering over the internet is that the medication could be a toxic concoction that someone has mixed up.

Tomorrow I see my GI again. I will ask him whether Hydrocortizone enemas are available over here although I'm not holding out much hope after what the pharmacist told me.

Ask for a "compounding pharmacy", call one nearest to you and ask them if they can make the enemas up for you. If yes then call your GI for a script and fax it to them to get started.

Also, you can check if they have beclomethasone enemas.

Entocort is the budnisone. Sad to hear it did not help.

A compounding pharmacy may not be a bad idea.
