Ibs and ibd...when you have both...

When you have both...how do you tell which is which? After starting suppositories nightly I noticed a nice decrease in my BMs. For two weeks straight I was going 1-3 times, spaced out throughout the day, glorious! Today I crapped four times all within about half an hour! The were formed, the last two were kinda urgent, I think. Does this sound like something I might have eaten, or "ibs" or do you think the inflammation is still going in there? How do you tell the difference?

When there is a need for toilet relatively soon after eating/drinking I feel it's IBS. But...for me IBS is related to food/drink that are not "safe" and multiple BM's are related to how much my gut hates whatever it was.
My gut acted the same way while flaring but turmoil was continuous because my gut was inflamed and unhappy all the time.

IBS and IBD are so intertwined it's really challenging to figure out. But for me it's all about the food/drink that goes in, doesn't matter what I call it IBD or IBS. Eliminating everything my gut hated got me to remission.

Ugh, I guess I had two weeks and thought I had hit remission...was desperately looking for an excuse for today but it sounds like I'm still effing inflamed. Wonderful.

Yeah, I know, I always thought "ibs" was a load of crap as far as diagnosis. I just see many people on here that have had their GI tell them they have both. Is it normal to go a couple of good weeks....change nothing...then have a bad day? Ugh. I just don't know what I'm supposed to expect with all this. I thought I was headed in the right direction.

Yeah, I document everything that goes in to my mouth, what time I ate, and I document everything (in detail) that comes outta my butt and at what time. I haven't changed anything...didnt add new food, take my meds religiously, never forget em. Use my butt meds every night. How does my colon repay me? With a weeks worth of crap in a half hour period. Eff you, colon. Eff you.

Dairy, fruit (other than banana or really well cooked apples) nothing with "high" fibre of the in soluable kind...too many things in processed foods to count...so I omit em all....garlic is my WORST ever (feels like death), the list goes on and on and on.....

I'm hoping its a blip too. Maybe I was backed up or something and the floodgates finally opened with a whoosh!!

I'm the same with Basa. My UC pain is always on my left side. IBS pain is right before a bm, during and instant relief after finishing. Cramping like takes my breath away.

But I was having IBS symptoms a long while before UC hit. My mom has IBS also, but no IBD.

One thing that helped me get my IBD into a sustained remission for a few years now was the addition of certain antidepressant drugs to my treatment regiment, which slowed or even stopped diarrhea and lead to more well-formed bowel movements where they rarely occurred for most of my life. I found Bupropion (Wellbutrin) to be very helpful along with a low dose of Doxepin (Silenor.) Also the non-prescription supplement Valerian root extract, which is commonly used to help with sleep, has also been very helpful at times.

Other suggestions, brown sugar banana bread without nuts and anything that helps absorb excess water in the colon and also avoiding caffeine and carbonated beverages if you have had active diarrhea recently.

"I personally don't like it when people dismiss IBS as being a syndrome, my daughter and my sister can both vouch for having IBS (my GI has also told me he highly suspects that I also developed IBS after having yrs of flaring without any remission with my CD. It's each persons choice to believe IBS is it's own entity."

Why do you have a problem with it being called a syndrome? I assumed it was because they know so little about the cause of the symptoms and signs of IBS they couldn't justify placing everyone with those problems under the umbrella of one disease. I almost think UC should be a syndrome because I am not convinced it is a single disease. IBS, gastritus(ulcers), and UC used to be broadbrushed as psychosomatic or stress caused diseases which was really jumping the gun.
