Thanks Quincy. I have started up with some psyillium (Lepicol) and seems good. They packed me up with it when I left hospital in 1988
but I didn't stick with it for more than 6 months because like so much of the prescribed stuff from the UK National Health Service, it is full of rubbish as fillers.
I hadn't realised even before about
the anti-spasmodic they put in it, just reading up again on it now
Fybogel:
Ispaghula husk [that is just the more common name for psyllium in the UK) is capable of absorbing up to forty times its own weight of water in vitro and part of its activity can be attributed to its action as a simple bulking agent. In addition, colonic bacteria are believed to use the hydrated material as a metabolic substrate. This results in an increase in the bacterial cell mass with a consequential softening of the faeces.
Mebeverine hydrochloride is a musculotropic antispasmodic agent which exerts a direct action on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, relieving the spasm without affecting gut motility.
